Hyo Soon Kang is a professional musician on the traditional 12 stringed zither of Korea called the kayageum. This type of instrument is similar to the koto in Japan and the Gu Zheng in China. She played with the leading orchestra of Korea in the capital city Seoul before coming to New Zealand in 1994. She now lives in West Harbour where she teaches students how to play Korean musical instruments ie. the kayageum, songs and drumming. She performs regularly with her ensemble in full costume for cultural festivals and in schools. In addition to classical traditional music, she performs with 'world music fusion' style bands. She was recently presented with the highest Cultural award medal by the Prime Minister of Korea for her enormous contribution to Korean culture in New Zealand.
Fung Yang is an accomplished musician from Taiwan who plays the erhu which is a two stringed traditional Chinese violin. He also plays the bamboo flute and sings. His family moved to NZ ten years ago and live in Titirangi. He is perhaps best known to Western audiences from his performance with the popular Auckland World Music fusion band 'Many Hands'. Concert organiser, Laurie Ross introduced the band to Titirangi for the first WOMAD-style event in Waitakere City Sept. 2001.
However, the concert on 19th June will allow Fung Yang to share with us more directly his authentic Chinese culture presenting his range of musical skills.
