100 years of love at St Matthew-in-the-City

8th July 2005
MEDIA RELEASE

Celebrating 100 years of love at St Matthew-in-the-City

Last year, 75 couples were married at Auckland’s St Matthew-in-the-City Anglican Church. That would be considered an average year.

Since the church was opened 100 years ago, that adds up to well over 7500 weddings. Add to this dozens of relationship blessings, and you have one of Auckland’s most popular venues for celebrating love.

To honor the place the church has played in the relationships of so many couples over the last century, St Matthew’s will be holding a special service on Sunday, 31 July, simply called “Celebrating Love.”

“We warmly welcome as many couples and their families who celebrated weddings or blessings at St Matthew’s to join us on this day to celebrate their love,” says St Matthew’s vicar, Revd Glynn Cardy. “Let us know if you will be joining us by phoning or emailing our office.”

The service will feature music performed by the St Matthew’s Chamber Orchestra, including popular wedding hymns and traditional wedding marches.

A key part of the service will be the opportunity for those couples who were married or blessed at St Matthew’s to reaffirm their vows to each other.

Also, like at any wedding, there will be a big cake to share afterwards and a guest book for signing by those in attendance.

For more information about this event, contact the St Matthew’s church office on 09 379 0625, or email brendan@stmatthews.org.nz
