Farr orchestral work at 2005 World Expo
Aug 1st, 2005
Gareth Farr’s work Naga Baba will be performed in Japan by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra as part of their 2005 tour to Europe and Asia. The performance will take place at the World Expo in Aichi on 22 August, 2005.
Of Naga Baba, the composer writes: ‘The Naga Baba are one of the more extreme sects of the Hindu religion in India. Worshippers of Shiva, they wander from village to village, naked but for a covering of ash. They have no possessions, and depend on the alms of the villagers who lay food out for them, motivated partly by respect, partly by fear. Naga Baba is inspired by the silent austerity of these holy men.’
The August tour will be a historic one for the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. Conducted by Music Director James Judd they will perform at the world-famous 2005 BBC Proms and one of Europe's most sought-after concert halls - the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. This will be followed by a tour to the World Expo in Aichi, Japan representing New Zealand. This is the largest tour outside New Zealand that the NZSO has ever undertaken, the first ever appearance by a New Zealand orchestra at the prestigious BBC Proms and will feature two of New Zealand’s most prominent musical ambassadors, Dame Kiri te Kanawa and Jonathan Lemalu.
