Found! NZ’s Sexiest Single
Man
After running a campaign for votes that would put most New Zealand politicians to shame, 20-year-old Aucklander Alex Hempstock has won the title of CLEO Bachelor of the Year 2005.
The personal trainer and student at AUT made public appearances in shopping malls, gave a presentation in a lecture theatre and did a contra deal with university bookstore Bennetts, all in a bid to entice CLEO readers to vote for him.
Alex was one of 12 bachelor finalists vying for the title of New Zealand’s sexiest single man. Thousands of CLEO readers voted for their favourite buffed babe and Alex won the closely contested competition by a mere 10 votes, proving his marketing campaign had paid off.
“I’m normally quite a shy person but my Dad said to me, ‘Sometimes being shy is down there with being stupid.’ That’s when I decided I might as well go all out,” he says.
Alex is hoping his win will help launch a modelling career – he recently signed up with Auckland agency Nova. But his main focus is still fitness – he’s working towards a Bachelor of Sport and Recreation and has set up a personal training business.
“This is a classic case of knowing what you want and going for it,” says CLEO editor Sheryl Blythen. “I’m sure Alex’s campaign helped him get votes and those six-pack abs and bulging biceps didn’t hurt either.”
Other CLEO Bachelor of the Year 2005 finalists in the top five when voting finished were advertising executive Matt Knight, builder and blocklayer Rory Popham, 48May lead singer Jon Austin and flight attendant Kent Barrett.
