What's On In Nelson This Summer

It's Nelson ­ its summer and there's even more on offer than sun, sand, sea, cafés, galleries and leafy vineyards! The Sealord Nelson Summer Festival kicks off just before Christmas (17 December) with the fabulous family fun of The Community Trust Lantern Spectacular, and carries on right through until Sealord Opera in the Park on February 12th.

This festival aims to entertain locals and visitors with events that are mainly aimed at families who like a bit of fun. There is an outdoor movie season in locations all over the region, a Teddy Bears Picnic (January 15th) and Street Beat entertainment in the city. But there's just an edge of danger ­ no call it mischief ­ in some festival events:

The Collingwood Street FreshChoice Trolley Derby ­ Jan 28

Grown men release the boy within to hurtle down a central city hill. This celebration of speed and ingenuity attracts over 50 home made trolleys, with growing interest every year from adults ­ call it boys reliving their lost childhood ­ whatever! Theatre on the streets ­ February 06

Expect to be amused or even shocked as you shop, when some of the world's top street entertainers do their thing, in the NZ Community Trust Buskers and Street Theatre Series (Feb 2-5). After sell-out successes there are now two nights of the risqué show 'When Buskers go Bad'. Off the street and away from the ears of tiny tots and old ladies, the buskers really let rip - be prepared for some explicit language and adult action.

Summer Shakespeare

Later in the month (Feb 7 -18) Will Power Productions community theatre brings Shakespeare's Twelfth Night to life, with outdoor 'in the round' theatre set up in the central city (Trafalgar Street), Isel Park and Washbourn Gardens. William Shakespeare meets Ziggy Stardust in this hilarious gender-bending comedy that shows us love can see through any disguise. Presales inquiries to colleenwillpower@hotmail.com

Sealord Opera in the Park ­ Feb 12

A balmy Nelson summer night's opera in an evening picnic atmosphere…. fireworks as a musical finale. After seven years this formula is converting thousands of Nelsonians into opera fans, and drawing more visitors to the city in late summer. This year the Christchurch Symphony will be back for Sealord Opera in the Park with a line up singers yet to be confirmed. This event is at Saxton Field Nelson on Sunday February 12th at 7.30pm. Neudorf Country Occasion

More than 75 stalls will be selling everything from teddy bears to Italian gumboots, paneforte to antiques at the Neudorf Country Occasion. Held on the last Sunday in November this is the time to start Christmas shopping while sipping a glass of wine and wandering under the trees and through the gardens.

Antique and Classic Boat Show

Shine up the brass, polish the teak ­ the sixth Seresin Estate Antique and Classic Boat Show at Lake Rotoiti in the Nelson Lakes Nation Park is set for the weekend of March 4 & 5.

The Antique and Classic Boat Show will feature public displays, racing, and an evening prize giving and get together. On Sunday there will be further public displays and racing, finishing at 3.00pm. the usual range of clinkers, canoes, classic sail boats, seagulls, steam launches and vintage race boats will be competing for the Jens Hansen Cup.
