My Brother And I Are Porn Stars - At BATS THEATRE
MEDIA RELEASE: 01 NOVEMBER 2005. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE. PAGE 1 OF 2.
The weird and bizarre world of “My Brother And I Are Porn Stars” hits Wellington!
Fresh from a hugely successful season at Silo Theatre, Auckland’s latest cult hit, My Brother And I Are Porn Stars, is set to shock and thrill Wellington audiences, performing a 3-week season at BATS Theatre, November 29 – December 17, 2005.
Abandoned after their parents’ mysterious disappearance, Jackie and Jon are left alone to run the family porn business. Twenty years later when their money runs out, a desperate struggle begins to keep the only world they’ve ever known intact. However, the 0900 sex lines and Christian Porn videos incite only anger and rage. In a mixture of claustrophobia, paranoia and hallucination, Jackie resolves to jump at a chance of normality. But it is harder than she thinks…
Starring Jackie Van Beek and Jonathan Brugh My Brother and I Are Porn Stars is risky, boundary-breaking theatre, with a self-censored R18 rating. The show is directed by Colin Mitchell, and co-written by the performers and Jodie Molloy.
Props include an 18-inch penis possessed by a spirit from the past, and costumes and toys sponsored by D’Vice, NZ’s foremost designer sex shop. My Brother and I Are Porn Stars is a side-splitting, edgy love story that deals with issues of incest and de-sensitisation to pornography in a hilarious, fantasy-stricken manner. The show completely sold out in Auckland, with audiences leaving shocked and amazed, and a 2006 Melbourne season is in the pipeline.
Wellington audiences are no strangers to the surreal comic brilliance of van Beek (Peeling Back The Paint) and Brugh (Dinky Jon, and Sugar & Spice), The acclaimed duo are thrilled to have the luxury of a 3-week season at BATS.

WHAT OTHERS HAVE SAID ABOUT MY BROTHER AND I ARE PORNSTARS:
“Sick, twisted
and funny… My Brother and I Are Porn Stars is clever
inventive theatre that will make you laugh out loud while
you question your own perceptions of reality.”
New
Zealand Herald, August 2005
“An irreverent, surreal black
comedy... that features masturbation, sexual activities
which are not even in the Karma Sutra and an appearance of
God from a Monty Python episode….
Jackie van Beek and
Jonathan Brugh handle the comedy superbly, with an excellent
sense of timing and some rather sophisticated
acting”.
National Business Review, August 2005
