New associations offer film makers more at Wet West Film Festival

The Wet West Film Festival offers strong benefits to its film makers who enter with growth in the Festival associations…and prize list! Film South have joined the list of supporters of the event by backing the Judges Choice Award, and are excited to be connected to the West Coast event that’s getting an international following. And the good thing about this says Festival Director Jo Kearns is “Having an organisation come on board of the calibre of Film South is really good for our film makers, it’s another industry player within New Zealand who our entrants can mix with. It opens doors for our newer film makers and offers introductions.”

And the amateur film makers competition is keen too, now with a Sony DVD Digital Video Camera as the Amateur Film Award prize. Dave Kwant, co Festival Director says: “this is about encouraging new film makers to have a go, and about creating a quality event for these guys to be a part of, offering those with small (or no) budgets the chance to celebrate their film on the big screen.” And a rare occasion to see professional film alongside the fresh approach of amateurs, remembering that last years Wet West Film Festival People’s Choice Award went to Off The Lip from first time film maker Johnnie Harris.

Over 15 hours of film is now being sorted for the Festival programme that will be the 2006 Wet West Film Festival. Hokitika plays host again to film makers and film buffs for the four day celebration of film and water, in all its forms, from 5 – 8 January 2006. Tickets are now available from the Hokitika Information Centre for those keen to join the Hokitika crew for a splashing great time exploring water on screen and taking time to discover some of the West Coasts most watery delights, from the crashing waves of the Coast itself to the stunning Hokitika Gorge, to a swim in Lake Kaniere or a walk in the rain that’s been ordered to make the event perfect!
