“NOT a Silent Night” now a three-concert event
The Auckland Philharmonia’s annual Lion Foundation NOT a Silent Night concerts have always been eagerly anticipated by concertgoers. This year, because of their popularity, there are three concerts (instead of the two performed in the past). The concerts, at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Parnell, are on Friday 16 & Saturday 17 December at 7.30pm, and Sunday 18 December at 3.00pm.
“NOT a Silent Night” is a festive family concert combining orchestral works, vocal works and readings. Joining the Auckland Philharmonia and conductor Marc Taddei are guest artists including Shortland Street actress Kirstie O’Sullivan; cellist Jeremy Turner – making his last solo appearance with the Auckland Philharmonia before returning to the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in New York; stunning blind soprano Ju Heon (appearing courtesy of The Gabriel Trust); PricewaterhouseCoopers Dame Malvina Major Emerging Artists (appearing courtesy of NBR New Zealand Opera); and the NBR New Zealand Opera Chapman Tripp Opera Chorus.
The Auckland Philharmonia first performed “NOT a Silent Night” in 2000. “When it was created,” Orchestra Director of Operations John Ure says, “the objective was to present a Christmas concert that was a little bit different and included our fellow performing arts organisations. It’s a very accessible concert that appeals to a wide audience – and each year it’s been a huge success.”
