BEOP Shop Opens Tomorrow Morning

A large shipping crate mysteriously arrived in central Auckland Sunday night. Sitting plum in the middle of Freyberg Square in High Street with a sign saying ‘opens in 3 days’!

This is the secret project I was telling you about. Imported from the future, from a place called ‘Big Street’, the container is locked up tight until 9am tomorrow morning, when the doors will be flung wide so you can come check out the impressive goods and artefacts inside.

As I said previously, Big Street is a massive and impressive place, lying slightly sideways of our present time-zone, so this shipment from one of the greatest market places of the ages is sure to thrill

KIWI’S FIRST FILM A SLAM DUNK

New Zealander James Blick’s debut short film ‘Us’ has made the cut for the Slamdance Film Festival.

‘Us’ will screen in competition at the prestigious international festival in January 2006. The emotionally honest and confronting short was selected from over 3000 entries.

Blick, who wrote and directed the film, is currently working in France, but he will travel to Park City, Utah for the Slamdance Film Festival. He had this to say, “Slamdance is one of the top independent film festivals in the United States. I am obviously rapt!”

The film was produced by his brother Johnny Blick who also produces for Republic Films. The pair have another project lined up to shoot next year.

‘Us’ begins its festival run this week with its world premiere in competition at the Tirana International Film Festival. Immediately following Slamdance, the film has been selected to screen at the Victoria Independent Film Festival in Canada.

Blick is looking forward to returning home next year to continue working on his next project. He is currently writing and will again direct.

‘Us’ stars award winning actors Alison Bruce (‘An Angel at my Table, The World’s Fastest Indian’) and Alistair Browning (‘Rain’, ‘Lord of the Rings’).

A film about loss; ‘Us’ explores the fragile nature of trust and intimacy and how easily they are broken.

PACIFIC SOLUTION AIRS ON TVNZ

Respected Kiwi documentary maker Annie Goldson’s newest film ‘Pacific Solution’ will air on TV One at 8:30pm, Monday 2 January. Put this in your diary now as it’s easy to lose track of time over the Xmas break!

‘Pacific Solution’ is the story of the Tampa boys. Escaping from the Taleban they were rescued off a sinking boat. The young Afghanis were refused entry by Australia, but eventually accepted by New Zealand. Through a media maelstrom and political contest, they battled to have their families join them. Goldson's previous films including 'Sheilas', 'Georgie Girl' and 'Punitive Damage', have screened and won awards at festivals around the world.

Director James Frankham shot much of 'Pacific Solution' with small digital camera equipment, enabling him to capture intimate family moments and sequences that would not have been possible with a full crew. The result is a moving story, which examines the political climate and looming refugee crisis facing our world, through the prism of a family's journey.
