Moving Image Centre Update December 2005

MIC UPDATE DECEMBER 2005

*** ### ***

Well well well,2005 has been a huge year for the MIC. Kicking it all off with the groundbreaking Gina Cznarnecki show at the Union Fish Company, we quickly got accustomed to having a nice big building and decided to purchase the Galatos venue, home of the best underground sounds on the Auckland scene for nigh on ten years. Moving into Galatos in early May we got cracking on the moving image front with the awesome One Dot Zero symposium in April. Fast forward to the present and wev'e tucked several successful events under our belts;Intersect VJ festival, DV workshops, the Festival of Festivals French Doco Series along with audio treats from One Self, DJ Numark, and a host of others. That leaves us just enough time to dust off the jandals for our annual summer break. We will be departing the office from the 22nd of Dec and returning on Jan 9th. Many thanks to all our supporters, have a Merry Xmas and we'll see you in the New Year for more audio/visual delights.

4: 2006 PREVIEW

ALVO NOTO ( CARSTEN NICOLAI ): Berlin based sound artist and producer Carsten Nicolai [alva noto] has established himself as a leading member in the realm of electronic sound and visual designers, using art and music as hybrid tools to create microscopic views of creative processes. He creates precise rhythmic structures with electronic clicks and glitches as essential elements of his music, combining these pared-down electronic sounds with the rhythmic groove of hip hop and R&B. Nicolais works captivate consistently through their elegance, simplicity and cool technicism.

In his powerful live performances Nicolai produces sublime, post-techno grooves, accompanied by his now legendary live synaesthesic video.

Carsten Nicolai has performed and exhibited in many of the worlds most prestigious spaces including The Guggenheim NYC, MOMA SF, NTT Tokyo, The Neue national gallery, Berlin and Venice Biennale. His exploration of the physicality of sound continues in his collaborations with Ryoji Ikeda, Mika Vainio, his celebrated recordings vrioon and insen with Ryuichi Sakamoto and in the pioneering Raster Noton record label he co-founded. Nicolai won Ars Electronica Golden Nica prizes for Digital Music in 2000 and for Interactive Art in 2001. For further information visit www.alvanoto.com.
