Seven Sisters join 'The Don' for Auckland Zoo gig

Iconic Kiwi songwriter Don McGlashan is looking forward to putting on an exuberant show with his talented new band, The Seven Sisters, during their Coca-Cola ZooMusic series performance at Auckland Zoo on Saturday 25 February.

This will be McGlashan's second time performing at the unique outdoor zoo venue, and comes just ahead of his two sell-out shows happening next month at the NZ International Arts Festival in Wellington.

Wellington band, Little Bushmen, who won much praise during their successful stint supporting Dave Dobbyn's recent national tour, will add to this top night of Kiwi entertainment. The band combines the masterful musicianship of singer/guitarist Warren Maxwell (from dub/roots acts Fat Freddy's Drop and recently defunct TrinityRoots), drummer Rick Cransen, and Joe Callwood on guitar.

Accompanied by skilled new band The Seven Sisters - featuring Sean Donnelly (aka SJD) on bass, John Segovia (from the Boxcar Guitars) on pedal steel guitar and Chris O'Connor on drums - McGlashan says the Zoo audience can look forward to hearing fresh material from his forthcoming solo album, due for release in April, as well as some old favourites.

Widely regarded as one of the country's best songwriters, McGlashan has penned perennial classics Dominion Road and Anchor Me, amongst others. He has won a string of awards during his successful career with bands Blam Blam Blam, The Front Lawn and the Mutton Birds, as well as for his film and television compositions. Five of his songs feature in the 'APRA 100 Best New Zealand Songs of all Time' list, and he was hailed as "one of Britain's most intelligent, poetic songwriters" by The Sunday Times when the Mutton Birds resided in the UK.

Since the annual Coca-Cola ZooMusic summer concert series began in January, thousands have enjoyed performances from the country's best bands. Proceeds from ticket sales help the zoo carry out essential conservation work with native and overseas species. Che Fu wraps up the series on 5 March, with support from Ladi6 and Nick Hohepa.

Concert-goers are invited to make a day of it, come early, and explore the zoo with family and friends (please note that the Band Rotunda area will be cleared in the afternoon, and the zoo will be briefly closed from 5.15pm - 5.45pm to allow safe production set up). Pack a picnic, or purchase dinner and refreshments from the licensed Darwin's Café or the bar and BBQs set up near the Band Rotunda. A range of delicious food hampers can also be pre-ordered from Darwin's Café (phone 09 360 5261), and Weta Café will be open late.

Coca-Cola ZooMusic tickets can be pre-purchased at the zoo (ph 09 360 3805) or through Ticketek. With limited capacity, and tickets selling fast, we recommend advance booking. Tickets: Adults $20, Children (4-14 yrs) $10, and $50 for a family pass (2 adults, 2 children). Friends of the Zoo members receive a 20 per cent discount on adult and child ticket prices only.
