Happy Birthday Maori Television!
New Zealand’s national indigenous channel, Maori Television, celebrates its second ‘on-air’ anniversary today (Tuesday March 28).
Chief executive Jim Mather says significant progress has been achieved in the past two years as the station continues to cement its place as a permanent and valued element of the local broadcasting landscape.
Recent research shows that 50 per cent of the wider population has watched Maori Television while 82 per cent think the channel should be a permanent part of New Zealand broadcasting.
Approximately two-thirds of the total audience is non-Maori with monthly figures for 2005 showing an average 25 per cent increase over 2004 to date.
“Never before has this country had its own national indigenous television channel reflecting our uniqueness and the part that culture plays in the New Zealand identity,” Mr Mather says.
“While there are many more challenges ahead of us, we should not lose sight of the fact that we have made a very credible start in providing an independent, secure and successful Maori television channel broadcasting programmes that make a significant contribution to the revitalisation of te reo and tikanga Maori.”
