Back To Bedlam Again

Next Monday Englishman James Blunt plays Auckland’s St James Theatre. Good timing given that he tops not just one but two Charts this week, back on top on the Albums Chart and new in at #1 on the DVD list as well.

The six times platinum Back To Bedlam is #1 for a 10th non-consecutive week. It was last year’s biggest selling album and looks set to be among this year’s Top 10 Best sellers as well on current form.

Now there’s also Chasing Time: The Bedlam Sessions, a DVD/CD set that knocks U2 to #2 on the DVD list after the Irishmen’s 18-week run. This is a set of BBC-recorded live takes of songs originally on Back To Bedlam as well as bonus material such as James’ take on Crowded House’s Fall At Your Feet (#24 1991). Then there’s all the music videos and a short doco on each and an interview with the man.

So if you can’t make the show, you’ll at least be able to see what you missed.

Collected Attack

They hail from Bristol and feature 3D (aka Robert Del Naja), Daddy G (Grant Marshall) and Mushroom (Andrew Vowles). Every single one of Massive Attack’s previous albums has charted here, including 1994’s remix set No Protection with the Mad Professor.

There’s been a New Zealand and UK #1 album (Mezzanine) and now the best of compilation, Collected, with a couple of fresh tunes as well, makes it to #3 here.

The complete New Zealand albums hit list is:

1991 – Blue Lines (#26),

1994 – Protection (#9),

1995 – No Protection (#29),

1998 – Mezzanine (#1),

2003 – 100th Window (#5),

2006 – Collected (#3 currently).

Digital With A Capital D

The times they are a changing and internationally this week it’s Digital with a capital D. This week’s UK chart sees the very first #1 that has no physical single claiming the top spot purely on downloads ahead of the physical format’s release.

The track is Crazy by Gnarls Barkley and has had a presence radio-wise since January. The phenomenon’s already happened stateside, but then the Billboard Hot 100 includes airplay as well.

Closer to home, the Aussies start a Download Chart from this coming weekend. Which begs the question, when will we follow suit?

Next Week’s Local Derby

The battle for next week’s #1 is shaping up to be an all-local affair with two contenders from different ends of the spectrum and the country?

It’s a Classical vs Rock, North Island vs South Island, Male vs Female tussle as Russian-born Cantabrian Yulia follows her four-times platinum debut album Into The West with another Carl Doy-produced set, Montage.

And at completely the opposite end of the spectrum comes West Auckland punk rock n rollers the Bleeders with debut album As Sweet As Sin. The band already has two Top 40 singles under its belt, Out Of Time and So Lonely.

So just who will take out the honour of having the first new local #1 album of 2006?

The New Singles

#13 Jamie Foxx - Unpredictable

Oscar and Grammy-winning actor turned singer Jamie Foxx opens his solo singles account in exactly the same position as his debut album. On March 7 Unpredictable was the highest albums entry of the week and now five weeks later the single of the same name repeats that feat at #13. It is, in fact, Jamie’s second taste of Top 40 action, having collaborated on Kanye West’s #1 Gold Digger.

#20 Nelly featuring Paul Wall - Grillz

Nelly’s back with yet another collaborative hit. In the last couple of years there’s been Shake Ya Tail Feather with P Diddy (#3), Tilt Ya Head Back with Christina Aguilera (#4), Over And Over with Tim McGraw (#2) and Get It Poppin’ with Fat Joe (#24). Now Nelly teams up with Paul Wall on the former US #1, Grillz.

#30 T-Pain featuring Mike Jones - I’m In Luv (Wit A Stripper)

T-Pain just missed out on a Top 10 placing for his debut single I’m Sprung, peaking at #11 earlier this year. Now his debut album, Rappa Ternt Sanga, tops the Heatseekers list just outside the Top 40 Albums, while his second single and collaboration with Mike Jones, I’m In Luv (Wit A Stripper), enters the Singles list at #30.

#34 Morningwood - Nth Degree

It’s an out-of-the-box start for the New York four-piece led by 23-year-old singer Chantal Claret and former Wallflowers drummer Pedro Yanowitz. The pair first met at Sean Lennon’s 2001 birthday party. Nth Degree is the lead single from Morningwood’s debut album due later this month.

#35 Elemeno P - You Are

Auckland-band Elemeno P gains the third hit single from the group’s sophomore set Trouble In Paradise. New at #35, You Are follows the previous hits 11:57 (#10) and Burn (#36).

The New Albums

#3 Massive Attack - Collected

See story above.

#37 The Little Willies - The Little Willies

There’s a pinch of Norah Jones here - along with Lee Alexander, Jim Campilongo, Richard Julian and Dan Rieser - in The Little Willies. The five friends got together in 2003 for a gig at New York’s The Living Room to play some tunes together. Pleased with the results and sharing common influences, they decided to record a self-titled debut album, as their individual schedules allowed. It’s this week’s second new entry on the Albums Chart at #37.
