Meeting the Blues – a Dream Come True for Young People from Kidz First

Having the opportunity to meet the Blues at SKYCITY on Sunday [subs: April 9] and sit down together for lunch will be a dream come true for 12 young rugby fans from Kidz First Centre for Youth Health.

Kidz First Children’s Hospital has been nominated as the official charity for the Blues in 2006 and the lunch is one of many events planned for the young people during the season.

Blues captain Keven Mealamu says the health and well-being of children is something the whole team is concerned about. “Many of the team have young families and know how important organisations like Kidz First are.”

The Centre for Youth Health promotes the healthy development of young people through the provision and support of quality services, education, training and research.

Its vision is that all young people be supported to reach their full potential, says South Auckland Health Foundation executive director Pam Tregonning.

“These young people really look up to the Blues and being able to meet them in person is a great opportunity,” says Pam. “The Blues are such great role models – they are dedicated, work hard and have shown such great commitment.”

SKYCITY Auckland is proud to host this Sunday’s lunch at the SKYCITY Convention Centre. SKYCITY is a key sponsor of the Blues and have also been a major supporter of Kidz First since its opening in 2000.

“SKYCITY has been there for Kidz First from the start,” says Pam. “The amount they have done for the community is significant – from their founding sponsorship of the Kidz First Burns and Plastics Unit to hosting the annual Christmas party for Kidz First outpatients and families.”

The lunch will be followed by a public signing session in the SKYCITY Auckland Atrium from 2:00 – 3:00pm. Fans will be able to meet their favourite players to get autographs and photos.

Volunteers will also be collecting money for Kidz First at Eden Park when the Blues play the Chiefs on May 13. All money raised will go to the Centre for Youth Health.
