And The Winner Is…

The sales figures have been tallied and the winner found…

In the local albums #1 derby, Christchurch’s Yulia Townsend takes top spot (and first Kiwi #1 album of the year) by a nose ahead of Auckland punk rock band the Bleeders.

It gives both acts very credible results. Yulia makes it two from two as her debut set Into The West also hit #1, staying two weeks on top two years ago, while the Bleeders have a #2 debut and the second highest debuting local release of 2006 to date.

Which Came First?

Auckland band Pluto is just a shade away from returning to the Albums Chart with Pipeline Under The Ocean thanks to the current radio domination of Dance Stamina (currently #1 on the RadioScope NZ Airplay Chart), now following Long White Cross into the Top 40.

Dance Stamina is new at #32 this week, just a couple of places below the #30 peak of its predecessor. Which raises a question – which single actually came first? Technically Long White Cross charted first and had a retail release first. But Dance Stamina was, in fact, the first song sent to radio. After failing to initially land a lot of play, it went on the backburner and Long White Cross was released. It immediately set about picking up extensive TV and radio play and spurred a spike in sales for the album. A month or three down the track now, listener demand for more Pluto prompted radio programmers to revisit the first song… and this time it has taken off in a big way.

So the track has definitely got stamina, but will it beat the peak its sibling achieved?

Still Rolling

The Rolling Stones return to New Zealand for concerts this weekend in Auckland and Wellington and they just keep on rolling over the charts too, with two Stones sets in our Top 40 this week.

The career and label-spanning retrospective 40 Licks hit #1 back in November 2000. Driven by pre-tour buying, it re-entered the Albums Chart at #33 last week and moves up to #28 this week. Meanwhile the super-group’s latest studio set, A Bigger Bang, which first charted last year, returns at #32 in an updated tour edition.

The former quintet (now quartet) has had four #1 Albums and just the solitary #1 single, Harlem Shuffle in 1986, on the Official NZ charts.

For the record those #1 albums were:
Some Girls (1978),
Tattoo You (1981),
Voodoo Lounge (1994), and
40 Licks (2003).

The New Singles

#23 James Blunt - Goodbye My Lover

He’s fallen from the top of the albums list but recent visitor James Blunt gains the fourth Top 40 hit from it as Goodbye My Lover enters higher than any other song this week, new at #23 on the back of both retail sales and radio play. Not only that, You’re Beautiful re-enters at #40, as his DVD / CD set Chasing Time: The Bedlam Sessions reigns supreme on the DVD Chart for a second week.

#31 Jack Johnson - Upside Down

Hawaiian Jack Johnson gains the first hit from his fourth New Zealand #1 album Sing-Alongs And Lullabies. Jack’s first hit here was Flake, which went on to be the most played song on New Zealand radio in 2002. And if the Upside Down magic of previous songs by the same name rubs off, Jack could be headed for #1. Diana Ross hit the top with her Chic-written-and-produced Upside Down for three weeks in 1980, her sole New Zealand #1.

#32 Pluto - Dance Stamina

See story above.

#35 Robbie Williams - Advertising Space

Robbie Williams (real name Robbie Williams) has had three New Zealand #1 singles (Rock DJ in August 2000, Eternity in September 2001 and Somethin’ Stupid with Nicole Kidman in December 2001). Now the second single from his sixth New Zealand #1 album, Intensive Care, is new at #35. Advertising Space follows the set’s lead single, Tripping, which reached #20 late last year.

#37 Rihanna - SOS (Rescue Me)

Back in October last year 17-year-old Rihanna hit #1 with her debut single Pon De Replay. Her second single, If It’s Loving You Want, later hit #9. Now she’s back with her third hit, not from her debut album but a forthcoming effort. The Morse Code inspired hit shares its title with ABBA’s 1976 #1 SOS (revived in the late ‘80s by Austrian outfit Edelweiss, whose Bring Me Edelweiss was based on the music of SOS). SOS stands for “Save Our Souls”, in case you didn’t know.

The New Albums

#1 Yulia - Montage

#2 Bleeders - As Sweet As Sin

#13 Pink - I’m Not Dead

Alecia Moore took the name Pink based on her hair colour at the time. Her latest hit single Stupid Girls peaked at #7 recently (it’s #10 this week) just as the host album, I’m Not Dead, enters the Albums Chart at #13. Although she’s never had a #1 album. Pink has had a trio of #1 singles – Lady Marmalade (with Christina Aguilera, Lil Kim and Mya in 2001), Get The Party Started and Don’t Let Me Get Me (both in 2002).

#37 Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison and San Quentin Prison

What a year for the late Man In Black! A successful bio-flick (Walk The Line), his highest charting album here (Ring Of Fire: The Legend Of Johnny Cash, which hit #2), a soundtrack based on his songs (Walk The Line OST, #15) and even an Oscar for Reece Witherspoon’s performance as his late second wife June Carter. Now his breakthrough live albums, recorded at the respective prisons, are combined on CD and enter the Albums chart at #37. Cash recorded the track Folsom Prison Blues in 1956, but it was not till12 years later that the million-selling Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison album was released. This was followed a year later by Johnny Cash At San Quentin, in 1969, which included the Shel Silverstein-penned hit A Boy Named Sue.

#38 Foster & Allen - Sing The #1s

Irishmen Mick Foster and Tony Allen have been singing together since 1975. Their New Zealand chart career began in 1984 with the joint #1 Maggie, which topped both our Singles and Albums Charts. The perennial easy listening favourites have charted more than 15 albums here, the latest being a take on the #1 themed albums, providing their take on songs that hit #1 for other artists.
