Ngati Porou Pa Wars 2006

Maori Television is on the frontline when 23 marae face-off in a two-part special, NGATI POROU PA WARS 2006, screening in the Iwi Toa slot (Saturday May 20 and Saturday May 27 at 6.30 PM).

As far from an average sports day as you can get, the annual event sees marae teams battling it out in a huge range of activities – from touch rugby, equestrian events, swimming, tug-of-war, darts and athletics to board games, karaoke, chess, cards, pool and line dancing. Age is no barrier too, with competitors of all ages getting into the action.

Held this year at Ruatoria’s Ngata College, NGATI POROU PA WARS 2006 brings together almost 3,500 tribal members from throughout the country for a day of full-on action.

From the moment it begins, the atmosphere is thick with iwi pride as the competitors and their supporters pull together their passion and kaha in a bid for the coveted title of tribal champion.

Many months of hard work by the organisers, Te Runanga o Ngati Porou, go into making this special day a success and the cameras are there from the beginning.

The two-part special covers the history and planning of the event, the opening celebrations, and the people who make it happen. It’s straight into the tears and triumphs of the competition and concludes with the announcement of the overall winner.

Pat Makiri, who co-produced the show with broadcaster Cushla Tangaere, says filming was a challenge in itself. “From the moment the action starts, it’s full on until the end,” Makiri says.

“We didn’t want to miss anything so the cameras had to be everywhere. It’s an awesome day for everyone involved and a real showcase for the talent of the iwi.”
