The Return of Oral Tradition to Maori Television

Maori Television proudly presents the launch of the third series of MOTEATEA on Sunday June 18 at 6.00 PM.

Moteatea is an oral tradition where knowledge, customs and values are passed through generations.

Works of poetry that use tunes and rhythms to help commit them to memory, they give us special insight into the minds and lives of ancestors. Through moteatea we realise that, although time moves on, the experience of success and failure, loss and discovery, conflict, passion and love, remain the same.

Moteatea are also a rich resource of Maori language and an essential requirement in keeping the language and culture alive.

This beautifully-crafted series showcases full performances of moteatea with lyrics provided on-screen.

There are also interviews with iwi representatives to explore the depth of language and provide an explanation of the waiata. In addition to this, moteatea provide us with references to whakapapa and historical landmarks which maintain the tradition of connecting people to the land

This series, produced by Hinewehi Mohi and Fran Davey, presents performances of waiata from Ngai Tuhoe, Ngati Toa, Ngaiterangi, Ngati Porou, Ngati Raukawa, Rangitane, Ngati Awa and Ngati Pukenga.
