New Zealand Team to Tackle 24 Hour Kart Race in Thailand

Six of New Zealand's top Rotax Max kart drivers are in Thailand this week preparing for an international 24 Hour kart race.

The team consists of Bradley Tyrrell from Tokoroa, Neil Foster and Anthony Pedersen from Rotorua and Simon Evans, Paul Cameron and Tony Chambers from Auckland.

The New Zealand team will be one of 33 from around the world competing at the Birakart International Circuit at Pattaya in Thailand over the weekend.

Characterised by the organsiers as 'more than a race, it will be an international event where kart aficionados can meet and challenge each other in a sportive and friendly atmosphere' the race will pit teams against each other in identical, brand new 17 hp 4-stroke Honda-engined Formula RX3 karts complete with faired in headlights!

The race is open to teams of between five and eight drivers with a draw for karts on Saturday morning and a Le Mans-style start at midday. And there's big money and some valuable prizes for the team that comes out on top after 24 hours.

The winning team gets to split a $US12,000 first prize, the runner-up team $US6,000.

Helmet manufacturer Shark and watch maker Tag Heuer are also contributing. Each member of the winning team gets a special Gold helmet and a Tag Heuer F1 watch.

Each member of the second placed team gets a special silver helmet and a watch, and each member of the third placed team a special bronze helmet and Tag Heuer F1 watch.

There is also a Tag Heuer F1 watch for the driver who sets the fastest lap.
