Sing Us A Song Mr Piano Man
Fifty-seven-year-old Bronx, NY, born William Martin Joel has had four New Zealand #1 albums thus far - 1978’s 52nd Street, 1983’s An Innocent Man, 1985’s Greatest Hits Volumes 1 & 2 and 1993’s The River Of Dreams.
Singles wise there have been two chart-toppers – 1983’s Uptown Girl (a Top 10 cover a couple of years back by Irishmen Westlife) and in 1993 with The River Of Dreams title track.
Now Billy’s claimed the highest new entry at #13 on this week’s Albums Chart with a revamp (now including a hits DVD) of the compilation originally released in March last year.
Piano Man: The Very Best Of Billy Joel is the latest hits compile for the one-time husband of supermodel Christie Brinkley. The others include the already mentioned Greatest Hits 1 & 2, then there was Greatest Hits Volume 3, then those three combined for a Top 20 release in 1998, not to mention The Essential Billy Joel and The Ultimate Collection!

Lost Prophets Liberated
Lost Prophets (frontman Ian Watkins, guitarists Mike Lewis and Lee Gaze, bassist Stuart Richardson and Jamie Oliver on keyboards / programming) have double new entries on this week’s Albums and Singles lists.
The group, which formed almost a decade ago in Pontypridd, Wales, (also the hometown of Tom Jones) is new at #14 on the Albums list with Liberation Transmission while the set’s lead single, Rooftops, is new at #37 on the Singles list.
The group has the new #1 first week out in the guys’ native UK as well.
The LP was recorded and produced in Hawaii by Bob Rock, who’s worked with Metallica and Motley Crue among others. Lost Prophets’ previous album was the sophomore set Start Something from early 2004.

Now’s 21st
Just four days of sales is long enough for Now That’s What I Call Music 21 to blitz all comers, go platinum and land straight in at #1 on the Compilations Chart.
The franchise’s previous release, Now 20, still sits at #5 this week as well.
The series boasts a website and phone tones for the tracks along with track lyrics.
Now 21 includes half of this week’s Top 10 – tracks #3, #5, #7, #9 and #10.
The other new entry on the list is Comfort Zone, in at #6. It’s along the lines of the successful Lazy Sunday compiles of a few years back, not that surprising as the man responsible for them, Dave Southgate, when he was at EMI, is the man behind Comfort Zone now that he’s with Warners.

The New Singles
#23 The Datsuns - Stuck Here For Days
Cambridge foursome The Datsuns picked up four NZ Music Awards in 2003 (Best Group, Best Album, Breakthrough Artist and Best International Achievement). The guys’ self-titled first album debuted atop of the Albums list just under four years ago, and the third album is due later this year. In the meantime there’s a four-track EP, led by Stuck Here For Days, which takes out highest new entry honours at #23 this week. Best be quick as the EP is on limited release.

#37 Lost Prophets - Rooftops
See story above.

#38 The Pussycat Dolls featuring Snoop Dogg - Buttons
The Pussycat Dolls regain the #1 Albums crown from Gnarls Barkley with their debut set which has three #1 singles on it – three from three, in fact, as their only released singles so far (Don’t Cha with Busta Rhymes, Stickwitu and Beep with Black Eeyed Pea’s Will.I.Am) have all hit the top. The fourth track from PCD also features a guest star, Snoop Dogg, and debuts on airplay alone – expect it to rise fast as the single goes on sale.

#40 Orson - No Tomorrow
They’re from Hollywood but they’re a band not a movie! A rarity - an American band who’re bigger in the UK than their homeland – Orson makes its New Zealand chart debut this week at #40 with No Tomorrow. The song topped the UK singles list earlier this year and is the lead single from the album Bright Idea. Q magazine described No Tomorrow as “one long hook”.

The New Albums
#13 Billy Joel - Piano Man: The Very Best Of Billy Joel

#14 Lost Prophets - Liberation Transmission

#33 Ice Cube - Laugh Now, Cry Later
Formerly a member of NWA (Niggaz With Attitude), 37-year-old LA native Ice Cube (real name O’Shea Jackson) gains his first New Zealand charting album. Previously the only chart appearance here for the influential rapper was 1993’s #38 single Check Yo Self, a collaboration with DAS EFX which sampled Grandmaster And The Furious Five’s 1983 #2 The Message.

#36 Jewel - Goodbye Alice In Wonderland
Thirty-two-year-old Jewel Kilcher was born in Utah and raised in Alaska. It’s just under 10 years since her debut album hit our charts, going all the way to #1 for a week. It included her first hit, Who Will Save Your Soul?, which peaked at #14 in 1996. Her fifth charting album, Goodbye Alice In Wonderland, is new at #36 this week.
