Dutch bass-baritone to sing in Wellington

The New Zealand School of Music is to host a recital and public singers’ workshop by renowned Dutch bass-baritone Harry Peeters this month.

The Public Singers’ Workshop will be held on Friday 21 July (10am to noon) at Victoria University’s Adam Concert Room on the Kelburn Campus while the recital will be held at the same venue on Sunday 23 July starting at 3pm. Peeters will be joined by Emma Sayers on the piano and the recital and workshop have been organised in association with the Embassy of the Netherlands.

Lecturer in Classical Performance, Jenny Wollerman, says Peeters has enjoyed an extensive career performing in leading opera houses.

“We’re really pleased to be able to host this workshop and recital by Peeters. He’s worked with distinguished singers such as Dietrich-Fischer-Dieskau (Salzburger Sommerfestspiele), Christa Ludwig and Jessye Norman. His repertoire spans diverse operatic roles from Monteverdi, Mozart, Rossini, Strauss, and Wagner to Stravinsky, Weill and Van Vlijmen.

“He has also worked with conductors of the calibre of John Eliot Gardiner, Claudio Abbado, Sir Colin Davis, Seiji Ozawa and Sir Neville Marriner. Future engagements will lead Peeters to Toulouse, Paris, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Cologne, Brussels, Luxembourg, Seattle and Perth.”

Ms Wollerman says this recital will be Peeters’ only New Zealand appearance and the programme will feature works by Robert Schumann, as well as works by Hugo Wolf and New Zealand composer Douglas Lilburn.
