Top Bands Come To Wanaka For Burton NZ Open

The sounds of some of New Zealand’s top musical talent will rock Lake Wanaka for two nights during New Zealand’s premier snowboarding event, the Burton NZ Open.

Featuring a mix of urban roots, hip-hop, funk, rock and drum ‘n’ bass, the Gravis Open Sessions is a first for the Burton Open Series, and will pave the way for a global tour of boarders and beats from the US, Europe, Japan and Australia.

King Kapisi, the Pacific’s most influential hip-hop artist, and Kora, with their unique blend of heavy funk and roots, will transform the Lake Wanaka Centre on Thursday evening, August 3, following day one of the three-day competition at the Snow Park.

The beats of electronica and drum ‘n’ bass will combine on Saturday, August 5, as Shapeshifter and Sunshine Soundsystem perform at the Lake Wanaka Centre. Saturday’s gig will also include the Burton Open awards ceremony.

Gravis Open Session tickets are $45 and are available from Play It Again and Quest in Queenstown and Lake Wanaka. Both sessions run from 8pm to 12am.

The Burton NZ Open features three days of halfpipe, quarterpipe and slopestyle action with $50,000 cash up for grabs and is destined to be the most spectacular snowboarding event of the season. It takes place at the Snow Park, in the Cardrona Valley, on August 3 to 5, 2006.
