Underwater Hockey Team Builds On Strong Start

The New Zealand Men's Underwater Hockey Team has consolidated on its strong start to the Underwater Hockey World Champs in Sheffield, England, with victories over the fancied Netherlands and France teams, to hold first position.

On Thursday, the New Zealand Men had an extremely impressive first half against a very experienced and committed Netherlands team, scoring 5 goals within the first 10 minutes, and securing victory in the second half 6-3. While on Friday, the Team disposed of a physical France team in clinical fashion with a 4-1 victory. The Men's Team now head the current standings on 12 points, with France in second position on 9.

Captain Liam Watson said that "the Team had made a strong start, but needed to ensure that the Team's form continued in the upcoming tests against the strong nations of Canada, South Africa and Australia".

Following defeats against the Canadian and British sides, the New Zealand Women's Team bounced back with strong victories over USA 5-1 and Turkey 13-0. Captain Bridget Cassidy said that "she was pleased that the Team was beginning to realise its potential. These results show that the Team's campaign was back on track".

The Men's Team's next game is against Canada. While the Women's Team's next games are against France and Italy also on Saturday.
