Christina Gets Back To Basics
Christina Aguilera’s Back To Basics debut this week gives the 25-year-old her highest new entry ever on our Albums list.
Sitting in the runner-up position, it makes a strong showing at #2 but unlike the UK and Australia (where it went straight into #1) it is held out of the top spot here by The Black Seeds.
Meanwhile, the double CD’s lead single Ain’t No Other Man moves up on both the Singles list and RadioScope100, resting at #5 and # 3 respectively.
The former Mickey Mouse Club regular and Best New Artist Grammy winner in 1999 makes a more solid start this time than her last album, Stripped, which opened at #48 in February 2003 for a solitary week, before re-entering three weeks later and peaking at #5 – the same high point as her 1999 self-titled debut.
Single-wise Christina has racked up four #1s – What A Girl Wants (2000), Nobody Wants To Be Lonely with Ricky Martin (2001), Lady Marmalade with Pink, Mya and Lil Kim (2001) and Beautiful (2003).

A Kooky Start
It’s a Kooky start indeed for Brighton band The Kooks as they launch their assault on the NZ Charts with debuts in the Albums, Singles and RadioScope airplay charts.
Their debut set, Inside In, Outside Out, recently topped the chart in their UK homeland and is new at #32 here. The lead single Naive is also new at #21 on the Singles Chart and sits at #2 on the RadioScope100.
Luke Pritchard, Hugh Harris, Max Rafferty and Paul Garred got together in high school in 2003. Inside In, Outside Out was recorded at London’s Konk Studios, owned by one Ray Davies, formerly of The Kinks.
The Kooks are touring Germany early in September, then playing the UK before going Stateside in October. It’s probably naive to think they’ll be here any time soon, but there’s always the clip on the tele.

Fielding Does It Again
Fielding’s already given us the Hume brothers, aka Evermore, currently #1 on the RadioScope100 with the country’s most played radio song Running. Now fellow Fieldonian – 22-year-old Sam Hamen – joins them in the Singles Chart with his first solo hit, Just Roll.
Sam, better known these days as PNC, spent time in Palmy as well before relocating to Auckland in 2004 and hooking up with Pete Wadams (aka P-Money) and Dirty Records.
As a collaborator, PNC’s already been to the top – he featured on P-Money’s #2 album Magic City, on the chart-topping Stop The Music alongside Scribe – so now it’s time for the solo debut. Rookie Card (named after PNC’s basketball card collecting habit) drops on September 25.
Sione’s Wedding and Bro Town genius Oscar Kightley lends a hand with the visuals for Just Roll, directing and cameoing in the video which sees PNC playing Milli Vanilli, PM Dawn, and Boyz II Men amongst others.

#31 Stacie Orrico - I’m Not Missing You
Twenty-year-old Seattle-born Stacie Orrico places the lead single from her third album, Beautiful Awakening, in our Singles list at #31. Her first hit here was (There’s Gotta Be) More To Life, which hit #3 in late 2003.

#34 Coldplay – The Hardest Part
Coldplay lift the fourth single from their chart-topping four time platinum third album X&Y.

#38 Justin Timberlake – SexyBack
Former N*Sync-er Justin Timberlake debuted at #6 in November 2002 with Like I Love You, his first solo hit here, lifted from his first solo outing Justified. Four years on and SexyBack, the first single from his sophomore set FutureSex/LoveSounds enters slightly lower at #38. However, don’t be fooled, the track (currently #1 across the ditch) should rise next week with its first full week of sales.

#13 Tom Petty – Highway Companion
He’s not a stranger to our charts. Tom Petty turns 56 in October and racks up his 14th chart album here (16 if you count his two outings as a Travelling Wilbury.) It’s been 28 years since his first chart appearance with The Heartbreakers when You’re Gonna Get It reached #33. Among the list are two #1 albums, 1980’s Damn The Torpedoes and 1981’s Hard Promises. Petty’s latest, Highway Companion, is a solo release but does feature long time collaborator Mike Campbell. As for singles, Refugee was Tom’s biggest hit single to date, reaching #3 in 1980.

#29 Obie Trice – Second Round’s On Me
Obie Trice (real name Obie Trice), the rapper from the Motor City, follows his debut album First Cheers with his sophomore effort Second Round’s On Me. The album features the lead single Snitch with the ever-busy Akon.

#37 DMX – Year Of The Dog Again
‘Dark Man X’ is abbreviated to DMX for the CDs put out by NY rapper Earl Simmons. The 35-year-old’s sixth solo outing is new at #37 and is his first set since 2003’s Grand Champ.
