Molecular Slice Wins Inaugural Luminous, The New Zealand Art of Glass Award

The first Cavalier Bremworth – Luminous, The New Zealand Art of Glass Award has been won by Ruth Allen for two pieces from her Molecular Slice – Synergistic Series.

The award is the latest addition to the Mazda Artworks week of events. It was presented at the Hilton Auckland last night (29th August) by the competition judge, eminent Australian Glass Artist Warren Langley, who is a standard bearer for innovative glass sculpture and the exploration of light and glass as design elements for architecture and interior decoration.

Warren Langley explained: `Ruth’s work has the important quality of pushing the art of glass technically and conceptually. She also stretches the boundaries aesthetically. This exhibition is extraordinarily important for glass as an art form in this country. The rise of the studio glass form in New Zealand has been incredible as is the amount of attention it has earned internationally. This is a great opportunity for the art of glass to be showcased and Cavalier Bremworth’s support is very timely.’

New Zealand born Ruth Allen studied at the Canberra School of Art under Klaus Moje, Elizabeth McClure and the late Stephen Procter. Ruth graduated in 1993 and in 1995 returned to New Zealand and established a hot glass studio. She is currently enrolled in a Master of Fine Arts degree, majoring in glass and sculpture at Monash University, Melbourne, Victoria.

The Award was conceived to have specific appeal to architects, interior designers and developers who are now becoming increasingly involved in the use of glass in both large and small scale projects.

Merit awards were presented to Jim Dennison with Leanne Williams and James Walker with Vicki Fanning.
