42 BELOW COCKTAIL WORLD
CUP – DAILY NIPS
WEDNESDAY
Day Three of the 42
BELOW Cocktail World Cup saw the 42 contestants mix up a
storm on top of the Remarkables for the Red Bull Ready
Steady Shake Heli-mix Challenge.
Suited and booted in snow gear, each team was helicoptered up to the spur on the Remarkables and given a mystery set of ingredients with which to create a cocktail – from limoncello to lavender-gomme syrup, tamarillos to tomato juice, pure ice straight from the slopes and of course the vital ingredient, 42 BELOW Vodka.
With just a few minutes on the clock, the pressure was on for competitors to get cocktail-creative and impress the judges – 42 BELOW Chief Vodka Bloke Geoff Ross and Vodka Professor Jacob Briars.
The event was won by the Canada-Ireland team, who pulled off a stunning comeback after finishing last in Monday’s Extreme Cocktail Bungy Challenge.
Vodka Prof Jacob says, “The Can-Irish guys showed fantastic teamwork - these guys have really pulled finger and have been putting in the practice over the past 24 hours, and it shows.
“The standard of our top four teams were exceptional. They even beat our wildcard team of experts – Savoy Hotel head barman and cocktail godfather Peter Dorelli, celebrity mixologist Alex Kammerling and Bartender Magazine’s Naren Young, who came in 5th with a mind-blowing triple-strained creation.”
Australia North came 2nd, with the New Zealand ProFlo Mixers team 3rd and UK1 4th.
Contestants had a rest day from competition yesterday. Instead, they enjoyed a cocktail summit with 42 BELOW CWC judge Peter Dorelli at the Skyline. Peter passed on some of his 40 years of experience to the 42 mixologists, such as the importance of always stirring, never shaking, a martini and the perfect lemon zest.
Then, bartenders headed out to various bars around Queenstown where they got the chance to show off their skills to the general public. Jose from UK2 created a stunning ginger and limoncello cocktail for the 42 BELOW team at The Spire, and Bungy Challenge winner Ferdi from Dubai revealed an incredible range of juggling, breakdancing and magic tricks at Bar Up.
Next up is the Shotover Martini Challenge, where contestants have to mix a martini on board the Shotover Jet, followed by the 42 BELOW Cocktail World Cup Final Event on Saturday 16 Sept at 2pm at Earnslaw Park in Queenstown. The cocktail shake-off is worth 85% of the final score - this event is open to the public and will be nothing short of spectacular, with competitors keeping many a trick up their sleeves for the grand final.
