Scots Patrol
Snow Patrol claim the penthouse atop of the New Zealand Albums Chart this week, becoming the first Scottish group to land a #1 album here in 12 years with Eyes Open. Wet Wet Wet were the last from north of the border, hitting the top in August 1994 with End Of Part One.
Not only have they landed a #1 album, the Patrol make it a double by claiming the most played song on the radio this week, Chasing Cars heading the RadioScope100. (It also moves to #30 on the Singles Chart on airplay alone).
It’s a very good result indeed for a band virtually unknown here 18 months back. Eyes Open is, in fact, the group’s fourth album and was a recent chart-topper in their native UK.
For the new album the group added a new bassist and keyboardist and with a little help from TV’s Grey’s Anatomy, which recently featured Chasing Cars prominently, it’s jackpot time as the set moves from #4 to #1 in its 10th week on the chart.

#4 For Justin
Justin Timberlake may have topped the list in the UK and Australia with his sophomore FutureSex/LoveSounds but he still makes a strong opening here, in at #4, with his second solo album.
In fact, it’s already peaked one place higher than Justin’s debut Justified, which stalled at #5. That album had a much more shaky start, debuting at #41 before slipping to #44 in early December 2002 and dropping off the list until late March 2003. It finally gained traction in May that year, peaking at #5 and racking up 36 weeks on the chart over a year-long period.
This album has had no such slow start, no doubt helped by the fact the 25-year-old former N’Syncer is currently #1 on the Singles Chart for a third straight week with lead single SexyBack.

The New Singles
#12 Chingy featuring Tyrese - Pullin’ Me Back
Ahead of his new set Hoodstar (which drops next week), comes the lead single Pullin’ Me Back, which has Chingy collaborating with Tyrese and claiming highest Singles new entry honours. It’s a higher start than the 26-year-old St Louis native’s debut single Right Thurr which started out at #43 in late August 2003 before eventually hitting the jackpot when it went all the right up thurr, spending a week on top in October 2003. Will this be Chingy’s fifth gold single here?

#16 Pink - U + Ur Hand
It’s her third hit of 2006 as Pink txt-speaks into the chart at #16 with U + Ur Hand. It’s also the third hit lifted from her fourth set I’m Not Dead.

#19 Evanescence - Call Me When You’re Sober
Evanescence hail from Little Rock, Arkansas, and claim the first hit from their forthcoming third set The Open Door, which is out the first week in October. Call Me When You’re Sober features the distinctive vocals of Amy Lee and lands at #19 first week. Their biggest hit to date was Bring Me To Life which peaked at #3 in mid-2003.

#20 Kelis featuring Too Short Bossy
Harlem-born New Yorker Kelis Roger hooked up with The Neptunes on 2004’s Tasty, yielding two hits in Milkshake and Trick Me. Her latest album and single both dropped last week. The single Bossy features Too Short and is new at #20 this week.

#40 K-OS - The Love Song
Telecom did it with cute animals and oldies, now it’s Vodafone’s turn to drive a song (and no doubt a ringtone) into the public consciousness. This week’s #40, by Trinidadian-Canadian K-OS, is The Love Song, lifted from the hip hopper’s Joyful Rebellion set from last November.

#9 John Mayer - Continuum
John Mayer’s here live in concert on Guy Fawkes night at Auckland’s St James, and in the meantime his third studio album becomes his highest debut to date as Continuum opens at #9 for the three time-time Grammy winner and betters the #35 opening for his debut Room For Squares in June 2002.

#16 The Mars Volta - Amputechture
Also headed to our shores for a show later in the year are The Mars Volta, who score their second hit album with Amputechture, fresh in at #16 this week. Back in March 2005 Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala peaked at #21 with Frances The Mute.
