Fashionz.co.nz: Nom D At Air NZ Fashion Week

Fashion.co.nz Feature: Nom D At Air NZ Fashion Week

In homage to grunge and garage Nom.D designer Margarita Robertson once again broke the boundaries with her Winter 2007 collection entitled Stiff Upper Lip.

Models strode either side of the red spray-painted catwalk, two by two. Faces were pale with vivid orange eye shadow splashed across the eyes.

Vintage garments were worked through the collection and customised to Nom.D’s signature style. As usual tailoring was masculine, but the range had definite sex appeal too. A grey subtly printed snakeskin chiffon frock with unhemmed seams looked divine, as did a black silk balloon skirt that moved beautifully with the body.

A strong black colour palette was complemented by grey and white, and thrown into relief with a prevailing burnt orange, along with touches of blue. Oversized eyelet knits and vests fashioned from shoelaces were worn as dresses or layered over hoodies and long-sleeved tops.

This season’s signature prints were modelled on playing cards with “Nom.D’s very own king and queen” stencilled on t-shirts.

For the guys coats were long and made from suiting fabric. Stand-alone collars featured the playing card print, adding visual depth to the colour blocking.

Hooded basket-weave knits draped to the knee and were often tied at the back with an embossed symbol taken from the card print. Tweeds and pinstripes were printed onto georgette and jersey, rather than woven through wools.

Accessorisation was strong: checkerboard boots, which at first glance appeared to be socks as they were fitted to the leg and above the knee, and low slung hats worn over models foreheads (giving a Clockwork Orange overtone). Knit beanies with long ties featured in black and burnt orange.
