A body painted model wearing nothing but red corduroy shorts opened Miranda Brown’s show named Marama. Rather than the less wearable, “artistic” show some may have expected, the designer offered a pleasing array of frocks, coats, skirts and more casual vests and hoodies.

The Winter collection embraced notions of Utopia of the Pacific, mixed with Scottish heritage drawn from Brown’s own bloodlines. Brown created a “Pacific Tartan” by manipulating traditional patterns. The Frangipani flower was represented in a linear grid and looked best printed on a silk dress that was ruched in an oval shape through the front of the body.

Tartan fabrics in various colour tones were offset with bold red tights and stilettos. A favourite was a grey and steel coloured tartan suit dress with wide ruched straps. A range of fabric textures was used through the collection including wool, silk, chiffon and cotton. Skirts were strong, in puffball and bell-shaped styles.

Deep, earthy tones of red, olive, steel and sea blue were mixed with pastel reductions of these colours. Dashes of yellow and pink highlighted the collection on cuffs, tops, and subtly mixed into prints.

Progressing into more casual pieces, the shiny leather vest panelled with red printed fur was a bit outrageous for me, but wide collared jackets and jumpers looked funky with large buttons and contrasting lining. Oversized buttons also featured on a forest green tweed coat with a wide hood and tie around the waist.

A green felted wool scarf with yellow stitching looked warm and snug, perfect to top off any outfit this Winter.
