Welcome aboard new IMNZ members Hellsquad Records (The Datsuns), Maiden Records (Flip Grater), and Move the Crowd (Juse, Tyree). Great to have you with us!

A fresh batch of NZMIC Outward Sound recipients were announced this month, including IMNZ artists Savage, Tyree and John Psathas. Well done to 2006 Silver Scroll recipient Don McGlashan and 2006 Maioha recipient Bennett, both on IMNZ labels; and to the other IMNZ finalists James Milne (Silver Scroll finalist), and Mahinarangi Tocker and Rihitapuwae Tocker (Maioha finalists).

Bernie Griffen represented IMNZ at Popkomm, attending meetings of the Worldwide Independent Network on our behalf. Nigel Braddock from Monkey Records also attended Popkomm, and he’s spending ten weeks in Europe promoting his label and researching venues with a view towards organising tours there next year.

Tyree, whose album ‘Now Or Never’ was released this month in New Zealand, has been invited to support Jay Z along with Rihana and Ne-Yo on their Australian tour at the end of October. Tyree's album will be released in Australia through Universal Music, although no date has yet been confirmed.

Die! Die! Die! have signed with Tardus Music and have an EP, ‘Locust Weeks’, due for release in November. They will return to New Zealand and tour the EP. Minuit are about to embark on a 14 date tour of the UK and Europe to promote the release of the 12" single Fuji, which will be available in 16 territories from mid-October.

The Ruby Suns have signed a 2-album deal with UK label Memphis Industries, who release bands such as the Go! Team, Dungen and Field Music. The band's first album will be released at the end of this year in the UK through Memphis Industries and in Europe through V2 (under the name The Ruby Suns rather than Ryan McPhun and the Ruby Suns). In September, Ryan did a show in Melbourne with a band of locals, including Gus from Architecture in Helsinki and Jamie from the Raylenes. Back home, the Ruby Suns are taking part in a national tour as part of A Low Hum at the end of October and then supporting Animal Collective in Auckland and Wellington in November.

Videos of Agent Alvin and the Video Kid tunes were runners-up in the Handle the Jandal independent video awards; Charlie Ash’s O Baby took out the top peoples’ choice spot.

Cyphanetik’s debut album ‘Commercial Suicide’ is in stores October 2nd through Breakin Wreckwordz/Shock with a cast of guests including Mareko, Red Eye Society, Maia Rata, Tyna & JB, Louie Knuxx, Nate D and Tommy Harmonik; with production from BW’s Exile. Starting out with the Insomniacs in 2001, Cyphanetik has gone on to support the likes of Dizzee Rascal, Busta Rhymes and others. He’s also spent the last five years running the Breakin Wreckwordz label, which recently expanded to Australia.

Metallers Sinate have their second album due out at the end of September; entitled 'Violent Ambitions', it was recorded and mastered in Sweden. Tainted and Antagonist have support slots on the Blindspott national tour. Tainted and Sinate are joining forces to tour here with State Of Integrity (Australia) in November. Cobra Khan’s debut ‘Sleepless Lions’ is instores now, and they’ll be touring throughout September/October. Locals Cold By Winter, Cobra Khan, Tomorrow Comes In Silence and The Rabble join the international Taste of Chaos lineup.

John Psathas’ album ‘View From Olympus’ launched in Wellington on September 22, and late September sees the NZSO presenting the premiere of John Psathas' second Saxophone Concerto featuring Italian soloist Federico Mondelci. Jazz ensemble Mundi have been featured on Australian ABC Radio National’s Daily Planet show.

The Datsuns’ third album 'Smoke & Mirrors' is out October 2; and a limited edition CD/DVD will feature documentary footage of the band and the videos for Stuck Here For Days and System Overload. The single and album will also be available as a download on release. The band are touring the UK and Europe at present, and New Zealand tour dates will be announced soon.

PNC’s debut album ‘Rookie Card’ has just been released on Dirty Records.

Ill Semantics’ new album ‘Good Musik’, featuring the single On & On, is released October 2, look out for guest appearances from Aaradhna, Flowz, Adeaze and Lemuel. The record is a joint venture between Ill Semantics’ label Illegal Musik and Dawn Raid imprint Clientele Records. The Deceptikonz return with their album ‘Heavy Rotation’ in stores October 25, produced by New York producers Emile (Jay-Z, Madonna, D-12, Dead Prez) and Sol Messiah (Ghostface, Fat Joe, MOP). Right now Aaradhna is recording an album of Motown and Stax soul classics for release in December; Murray Cammick is A&R supervisor on the project.

Out now is Whirimako Black’s ‘Soul Sessions’, which features a selection of jazz tunes from yesteryear, many of which are sung in te reo Maori. The band features members of Nathan Haines’ tour band. Whirimako has been touring songs from this album with guitarist Nigel Gavin. Speaking of Nigel Gavin, he and Lorina Harding are embarking on an extensive nationwide spring tour, playing 38 dates and covering everywhere from Kerikeri to Oamaru.

Superette are playing a couple of one-off shows to celebrate 10 years since releasing their debut (and only) album ‘Tiger’, they’ll be joined by Voom (who Superette played their first gig with) and Mestar, who are about to release their second longplayer ‘Shut the Squizwot Factories Down’ on October 2nd.

Te Vaka perform in Dunedin as part of the Otago Festival of the Arts on October 11; they also have a new DVD due out. And the drums are beating over the launch of npme’s (new pacific music ensemble) debut album ‘Mareureu’ at the upcoming 10th Wellington International Jazz Festival in November; the album fuses improv jazz with Cook Island log drumming, and is a collaboration between Andrew McMillan and log drummer Taiau Nicholas, one of the few women teaching Cook Island log drumming.

Christchurch’s Flip Grater has just released her debut album ‘Cage For A Song’. She performed at SXSW in Austin, Texas, earlier this year and has played shows with artists such as Ben Lee, The Shins, Anika Moa, The Phoenix Foundation and SJD, and now she’s off on her first New Zealand tour, ‘The CookBook Tour’. This solo tour will see Flip traveling big and small town New Zealand in her Lada station wagon, playing and collecting recipes for a cookbook/tour stories book due for release next year.

Definite and Bling’s album ‘Flavourism’ is released on October 9 on Capitalrecordings. The album’s release follows their popular single tracks Jump Up, Daamm! and Like That.

Julien Dyne and Steph Brown from the Opensouls, plus guests, have a new residency, named Live Organ Jazz, at Joy Bong Thai restaurant on Saturdays.
