Maori Television Showcases Top Kapa Haka Events
Key kapa haka events in Hastings, Masterton, Palmerston North, Wanganui, Christchurch and Australia are featured for the first time in upcoming episodes of TOI WHAKAARI on Maori Television (Tuesday to Friday at 5.30 PM).
New Zealand’s national indigenous channel is screening performances from this year’s regional kapa haka competitions in the lead-up to the premier traditional Maori performing arts event – Te Matatini National Festival 2007. The biannual competition will be held in Palmerston North from February 22 to 27.
Upcoming episodes of TOI WHAKAARI include:
TAIKURA: Premiering on Tuesday October 10 at 5.30 PM. Held in Hastings in June, Te Matatini Taikura is a new initiative designed for senior kapa haka enthusiasts (55 years and over) to perform in a non-competitive environment. Features performances from Tamatea Taiwhenua (October 10); Ngati Kahungunu ki Heretaunga (October 11); Ngati Kahungunu ki Wairoa (October 12); and Ngati Poneke (October 13).
NGATI KAHUNGUNU: Premiering on Tuesday October 17 at 5.30 PM. Held in Masterton in June, Ngati Kahungunu Regional Kapa Haka Festival attracted nearly 400 competitors. Features performances from Nga Waka (October 17); Te Tawharangi (October 18); Tamatea Taiwhenua (October 19); Whanau Whanui ki Wairarapa (October 20); Te Kapa Haka o Parearau (October 24); and Te Rerenga Kotuku (October 25).
WAITAHA: Premiering on Thursday October 26 at 5.30 PM and ending on Thursday November 2 at 5.30 PM. Held in Christchurch in June, the Waitaha Regional Kapa Haka Competition attracted entries from five groups – Tu-Mata-Kura, Te Kotahitanga o nga Tai e Rua, Nga Manu a Tane and Te Ahikaaroa.
POIHAKENA (AUSTRALIA): Premiering on Friday November 3 at 5.30 PM. The Whenua Moemoea Regional Kapa Haka Competition was held in Sydney, Australia, in July. Features performances from Te Hoe ki Matangireia – New South Wales (November 3); Poipiripiri – Victoria (November 7); and Parramatta High School Multicultural Group (November 8).
RANGITANE: Premiering on Thursday November 9 at 9.30 PM. The Rangitane Regional Kapa Haka Competition was held in Palmerston North in August. Features performances from Te Ngare o Raukawa (November 9); Te Whanau o te Kura (November 10); Kairanga (November 14); Te Puke Ki Hikurangi (November 15); and Te Au ki te Tonga (November 16).
AOTEA: Premiering on Friday November 17 at 5.30 PM. The Aotea Regional Kapa Haka Competition was held at the Whanganui War Memorial Hall in August. Features performances from Te Roopu o Manawapou (November 17); Anewai te Rangi (November 21); Nga Purapura o te Taihauauru (November 22); Te Rau Kotahi (November 23); Aotea Utanganui (November 24); and Te Reanga Morehu o Ratana (November 28).
All new episodes of TOI WHAKAARI screen on Maori Television four days a week from Tuesday to Friday at 5.30 PM.
