"The Official New Zealand Top 40 premieres Friday nights at 8pm on C4"

Radio Band

The first New Zealand #1 in almost a year is a radio-manufactured survey promotion for The Edge as Boyband outsells all comers to claim the penthouse position on this week’s Singles Chart.
The last local chart-topper came in the last two weeks of October last year when second NZ Idol Rosita Vai’s platinum-seller All I Ask held the top spot.
A tongue-in-cheek take on the idol phenomenon puts five guys with no musical background who only got together a month ago at the top of the charts with a remake of a 42-year-old song. You Really Got Me was written by Englishman Ray Davies of The Kinks and was the first hit for them in 1964, when it topped the UK charts.
Now it’s a hit here for Gayboy (Rob Arnold), Fatboy (Jay Coote), Badboy (Gerard Clark), Hotboy (Peter Tuhuro) and Mummysboy (Chris Murray).
The group are on a 14-stop tour climaxing in an appearance at the NZ Music Awards (outside the venue) on Wednesday October 18.
Boyband’s vocal coach is none other than Jo Cotton, former member of Popstars TV band TrueBliss (who happens to work at The Edge).
Comparisons with Idol are bound to be drawn especially as two of the judges can be linked to band – Megan Alatini was in TrueBliss with Cotton while Iain Stables used to be on the Edge prior to moving to rival ZM.
Will this year’s idol winner make #1 and match Boyband? Which is the more influential medium when it comes to breaking, or making, music – TV or radio? Time and you will tell.
Although they’re New Zealand’s first boy band to top the charts, the first Kiwi boy band would have to be the Purest Form from Mangere who in the mid ‘90s racked up four hit singles - the biggest being a remake of the Split Enz hit Message To My Girl which peaked at #2, spending four months in the chart and going platinum.

A Killer Start

Las Vegas band The Killers are Dave Keuning, Mark Stoermer, Brandon Flowers and Ronnie Vannucci, and their sophomore set opens in pole position straight out of the box.
It also takes top honours in the UK and Australia. Sam’s Town makes a much stronger first impression than their debut set Hot Fuss which took over 3 months to make the Albums chart after its release in late September 2004. It first appeared at #39 in January 2005 before it finally peaked at #5.
The new album was recorded in their hometown and mixed in London. They’ve just been confirmed as one of the headline acts for the Big Day Out 07.
Track three on the album, When You Were Young, also hits the Singles Chart at #40 this week, on airplay alone, but seems destined to go higher as retail sales in the coming week push it higher. A killer start indeed.

#33 the feelers - One World
Which Kiwi act has had the most #1 airplay hits this century and has had two #1 albums? Christchurch group the feelers led by James Reid have. In fact, Stand Up from their last album won the most performed award at APRA’s recent Silver Scroll presentation. It’s also up for a Tui at the NZ Music awards. The band has sold over 130,000 CDs locally and the title track to their fourth set One World is new at #33 on the Singles Chart this week.

#38 Beenie Man featuring Akon - Girls
Jamaican Beenie Man’s lead single from his new album Undisputed is new at #38. Girls is collaboration with Akon who enjoyed two chart-toppers here last year, Lonely by himself and Moonshine with Savage.

#2 Evanescence - The Open Door
It’s a far bigger start for Evanescence’s sophomore studio set The Open Door, straight in at #2 this week, than their debut Fallen which began its chart career at a more modest #15 in May 2003. However, it went on to peak at #2 for a couple of weeks charting for 65 in total (including 36 in the Top 10!). Fallen sold over 60,000 copies in the process. The Little Rock, Arkansas, group picked up the Best New Artist Grammy in 2003.

#11 Scissor Sisters - Ta-Dah!
NYC’s Scissor Sisters place their sophomore set in at #11 first week, giving them their first New Zealand chart album (their self-titled debut stopped just short of the Top 40, but peaked at #1 on the Heatseekers list). Lead single I Don’t Feel Like Dancing has already hit the top in the UK and sits at #20 on the RadioScope100 this week.

#16 The Datsuns - Smoke And Mirrors
Cambridge’s favourite rockers and four time Tui winners The Datsuns prove there’s some substance here, not just smoke and mirrors. They make it three from three and follow their recent #23 single Stuck Here For Days with the album Smoke And Mirrors, new at #16. Their self-titled debut hit the top out of the box in November 2003.

#21 Tim Finn - Imaginary Kingdom
An exceptional debut given that the CD only went on sale on Saturday, Brian Timothy Finn seems set to go higher next week with a first full week of sales for Imaginary Kingdom. His last appearance on the Albums Chart was at #1 with brother Neil as The Finn Brothers with Everyone Is Here in August 2004. He’s previously charted as part of Split Enz, of course, with Crowded House, with Neil and as one third of a trio with Dave Dobbyn and Bic Runga. Tim’s first solo album, Escapade, hit #1 with lead single A Fraction Too Much Fiction peaking at #2 in 1983.

#30 Rod Stewart - Still The Same: Great Rock Classics Of Our Time
He’s back rocking again after four charting sets of standards from the Great American Songbook, the most recent being in November last year with Thanks For The Memory. The 61-year-old’s new at #30 this week with Still The Same: Great Rock Classics Of Our Time, a collection of rock covers including lead single Have You Ever Seen The Rain? originally by Creedence Clearwater Revival. Rod was on New Zealand’s first ever album chart in May 1975 with Smiler. In total he’s had four #1 sets: A Night On The Town (1976), Footloose And Fancy Free (1977), Blondes Have More Fun (1978) and Greatest Hits (1979). His Atlantic Crossing album from ’75 is one of the biggest of all time, spending 129 weeks on the Albums Chart to make it one of the longest charting albums here. (It peaked at #2).
