A Chemical Reaction
It’s a big week for New
Jersey’s My Chemical Romance. There’s the
out-of-the-box #1 album, the fast-rising #2 single and big
airplay gains on the RadioScope100.
Gerard Way (lead
vocals), Mikey Way (bass), Bob Bryar (drums), Frank Lero
(rhythm guitar) and Ray Toro (lead guitar) outsell Rod
Stewart to claim the pole position on the New Zealand Albums
list with The Black Parade, while the set’s introductory
single Welcome To The Black Parade very nearly goes all the
way to the top thanks to a whopping 35-place jump to land at
#2.
The chemistry is definitely building here for the
five-piece who join the Big Day Out down under in January
next year.
The band's name comes from the book Ecstasy:
Three Tales of Chemical Romance by Irvine Welsh. Recording
for The Black Parade began back in April with Green Day
producer Rob Cavallo. The clip for Welcome To The Black
Parade also has a Green Day link, directed by Sam Bayer who
did the honours on American Idiot.
The ‘70s Strike
Back
Forget the ‘80s, the ‘70s are back – that
is, three of that decade’s biggest selling acts. Rod
Stewart leads the pack with his latest Still The Same: Great
Rock Classics Of Our Time, which slips to the runner-up
position after two weeks leading the Albums char with his
first chart-topper since the ‘70s.
Then this week
Marvin Lee Aday returns as Meatloaf with the third
installment in the Bat Out Of Hell franchise. The set has
big boots to fill, as the original 1978 Bat topped the list,
as did the 1993 sequel Bat Out Of Hell 2: Back To Hell. Now
Meat and collaborator Jim Steinman bury the hatchet, almost,
for Bat Out Of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose, new at
#5.
The 59-year-old Mr Loaf’s lead single from Bat 3 is
the Steinman-penned It’s All Coming Back To Me Now, a
gold-certified #8 hit single in 1996 for French-Canadian
chanteuse Celine Dion.
The new album gives Meatloaf his
eighth chart set here in 28 years.
And the third 70s act
to return? Their albums have not been on general release
here for the past four years, but look out… Boney M are
back.
Their greatest hits compile The Magic Of Boney M
(with companion DVD set featuring the longest running NZ #1
single ever, the 15-week champion Rivers Of Babylon), went
on sale on Monday. They should join Rod and Meat next
week.
The New Singles
Justin takes a tumble and
the year’s longest running #1 single thus far crashes to
#7. Instead, the crown is claimed by recent visitor and Tui
guest presenter 22-year-old Englishman James Morrison, who
gains a #1 straight out of the blocks with his first single.
In the process, he betters his homeland chart placing for
the track as it peaked at #5 there. Only one new entry this
week…
#40 Janet Jackson featuring Nelly - Call On
Me
Some 23 years ago the youngest Jackson first charted
here with the #16 Young Love. Since then Janet has had two
chart-toppers, That’s The Way Love Goes (1993) and Whoops
Now (1995). The first hit from her current 20Y.O. album, is
new on this week’s Singles Chart at #40.
The New
Albums
#1 My Chemical Romance - The Black
Parade
See story above.
#5 Meatloaf - Bat Out Of Hell
III: The Monster Is Loose
See story above
#14 Robbie
Williams - Rudebox
Robert Peter Williams makes it to
double figures a year to the day since he hit #1 with his
last album Intensive Care. The 32-year-old’s 10th chart
set here is Rudebox, which opens on top in the UK and
Australia. Every album Robbie’s released has charted here
and he has had at least one Top 10 album here every year
since 1998. The Robster is currently on tour and finishes
his schedule in Melbourne in December, but doesn’t make a
stop here. Does Rudebox have the legs to give the Mr
Williams his sixth New Zealand #1 set? Time will tell.
#18
Hinder - Extreme Behaviour
Austin Winkler, Joe
‘Blower’ Garvey, Mike Rodden, Mark King and Cody Hansen
follow their hit single Lips Of An Angel (#34 Single, #5 on
the RadioScope100 this week) with their debut album Extreme
Behaviour, new at #18. Hinder placed the set at #3 in their
US homeland.
#28 Cradle Of Filth - Thornography
Formed
in 1991 in Suffolk, England, metallers Cradle Of Filth gain
their first New Zealand chart album with Thornography.
Having been top of the Heatseekers Chart last week, it’s
new on the main chart at #28 this week.
#35 Jet - Shine
On
It’s sophomore set time for Melbourne band Jet (who
take their name from Paul McCartney and Wings’ 1974 #2
Jet, about Macca’s dog). Shine On, new at #35, follows the
band’s 2003 debut Get Born. Brothers Nic and Chris
Cester, Mark Wilson and Cameron Muncey have sold over 3.5
million units worldwide, and they’re due here January for
the Big Day Out.
