Locally made programmes continue to get thumbs-up

Programmes and services funded by NZ On Air are important to New Zealanders, according to the latest Public Information and Opinion Monitor report released by NZ On Air.

The report, based on a random survey conducted in June this year, shows there is continued support for local content on television and radio, with documentary being the lead favourite with 84% rating it as their favourite programme type.

“It’s pleasing to see that New Zealanders continue to value seeing and hearing themselves on local programmes,” said Acting Chief Executive of NZ On Air Bernard Duncan. “The majority of New Zealanders still agree that NZ On Air provides good quality and interesting programmes and services.”

76% of respondents agreed that seeing ourselves on television and hearing our stories helps develop our cultural identity, and the long-running Country Calendar proved to be the most popular programme with 78% of respondents saying they watched it.

In terms of recognition of NZ On Air, the survey revealed that awareness of NZ On Air remains high and similar to previous years.

“In the end, people benefit from our work in being able to experience New Zealandness through locally-produced broadcasting,” said Mr Duncan. “Several NZ On Air funded programmes are watched and enjoyed by a high proportion of New Zealanders.”

Research on public attitudes and opinions to television, radio and music programming is a core function of NZ On Air, and the Public Information and Opinion Monitor is just one of many pieces of research commissioned by the agency each year.

“Knowing what people are thinking and feeling about local programming is invaluable in helping us make the right decisions when it comes to programme funding,” Mr Duncan said. “We will continue to survey public opinion and the results will contribute to the ongoing development of NZ On Air policy.”
