Aussie’s Baristaroos defeat The Black Cups


New Zealand’s biggest-ever coffee festival today saw the Australian barista team, the Baristaroos, defeat New Zealand’s The Huhtamaki Black Cups to win the world’s richest barista prize.

At the three day Wild Bean Coffee Festival & Awards at North Harbour Stadium the Baristaroos beat The Black Cups 257 points to 218 points, while in the individual event Australia’s Con Haraloambopoulos defeated Christchurch barista Carl Sara, who the previous day also won the title of New Zealand’s best barista in the National Barista Awards. Prizemoney for the event was $7000.

At the same time the results of the New Zealand Coffee Awards was announced with a record 65 coffee roasting companies entering more than 200 coffee judged by a team of international and local judges.

The Supreme Award for the single best roasted coffee went to Orb coffee, a coffee brand produced by Cerebos Greggs. The most successful roaster on the night however was Auckland’s Altezano which won one Gold medal and three Silver medals.

Gold medal winners were:
Filter Coffee – Robert Harris (Auckland), Altezano (Ak).
Espresso – Bean Around the World, Queenstown.
Flat White – Orb (Auckland).
Organic – Grants, Auckland.
Decaf – CoffeeLaLa, Coromandel
Supermarket Plunger – Robert Harris (Auckland)
Supermarket Filter – Havoc (Wanganui).
