Dorabella Wins NZB 1000 Guineas

Dorabella Wins NZB 1000 Guineas

Dorabella (Postponed x Caserio) shot to the top of the New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year Series after a mighty battle in the Group 1 New Zealand Bloodstock One Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Riccarton on Saturday.

Engaging in a head to head dual with the Mark Walker trained Princess Coup (Encosta de Lago x Stoneyfell Road) the nuggety filly secured the winning share of the $275,000 purse by a half a neck. Velvet and Satin (Carnegie x Romanee Conti), a half-sister to four time Group 1 winner Ethereal (Rhythm x Romanee Conti), was an impressive third.

Built in a similar mould to her sire, Dorabella is trained by Howie and Lorraine Matthews for her owners and breeders, Peter and Nancy Izett of Otaki. Not only does she lead the Filly of the Year Series she also leads the Southern Filly of the Year Series after winning the Listed New Zealand Bloodstock Canterbury Belle Stakes in September.

Dorabella is a half-sister to former successful New Zealand galloper Crusoe (Volksraad x Caserio) who has made an impressive start to his racing career in Singapore with three wins from six starts under his belt so far.

Postponed, a son of Summer Squall, boasts three stakes winners from his first crop to race (currently three-year-olds). There are three entries by Postponed in next week's Karaka Ready to Run Sale of Two-Year-Olds as well as nine entries in the upcoming National Yearling Sales Series at Karaka.

A devastating turn of events for the connections of favourite Naturo (Postponed x Rubiton's Best) saw her racing career cut short after injuring a flexor tendon. Testament to the tenacity of the filly, after faltering coming around the home bend, she fought on for a credible fifth.
