National Drawing Award

Part One: 2 – 16 December 2006

New Zealand’s two leading contemporary art spaces, Auckland’s ARTSPACE and Christchurch’s The Physics Room, are pleased to announce that the National Drawing Award is back.

Entries are now closed and 560 drawings from all over New Zealand compete for the National Drawing Award 2006. All entries will be exhibited at ARTSPACE and The Physics Room, in two parts with a swap between the galleries over the Christmas holidays. Part One, 2 – 16 December 2006 and Part Two, 16 – 27 January 2007.

The 2006 winner will be announced at the ARTSPACE opening on 1 December 2006 with the selection being made by a jury of contemporary art professionals – ARTSPACE Director Brian Butler, City Gallery Wellington Senior Curator Heather Galbraith, and The Physics Room Director Danae Mossman.

Opening the award up to a wide audience, the public vote will decide on the People’s Choice Award, announced on 27 January 2007 at The Physics Room. The 2006 prize pool includes a total of $5000 cash and other giveaways and the judged winner will also have a publication co-produced by the two galleries.

The inaugural National Drawing Award in 2004 proved hugely successful highlighting the depth and skill of drawing practice in New Zealand. Auckland artist Andrew McLeod’s drawing ‘Art School Dream’ was selected as the winner from 546 entries. The 2004 judges said: ‘Not only does this drawing use the medium of drawing with skill and distinction, it also talks about the business of art making.’ As a part of his prize he published the artist’s book ‘Largess’. Christchurch artist Jacquelyn Greenbank won the People’s Choice Award for her drawing ‘Queen Mother’.
