National Sports Award win for public health staff member

If being the current NZ kickboxing title and bringing up two daughters wasn’t enough of an achievement, Toi Te Ora – Public Health’s Carl Cowley has won the umpire/referee category at the national Maori Sports Award for his involvement in kickboxing.

The health promoter, based in the Eastern Bay, has umpired at four world titles and numerous local and international contests over the past five years. Carl Cowley picked up his award at a televised ceremony in Auckland on Saturday 18 November.

“It was an awesome night and I am really happy to have picked up the award,” says Carl. “It was thanks to Mataatua Sports because they nominated me after I won the Sports Official Award at the Mataatua Sports Awards a few weeks ago.”

Carl has been invited to attend the World Kickboxing Championships in Switzerland Labour Weekend 2007.
