Brooke Scores The 60th
It’s been hard to avoid
Brooke Fraser in recent weeks - and who’d want to?
She
hits paydirt out of the box for the second time as her
sophomore release Albertine follows in the footsteps of her
seven-times platinum debut What To Do With Daylight. It
topped the list in its first week exactly two years and two
months ago, spending three weeks total in the pole
position.
Now history repeats for Ms Fraser. Albertine is
the 60th local album to top our charts since the Official
Album Chart began in May 1975.
The first local #1 was
scored by expat Australian-based duo Bill & Boyd whose
self-titled set spent a solitary week at the summit at the
start of March 1976 and included the #5 hit single Put
Another Log On The Fire.
Speaking of singles, Brooke’s
Deciphering Me remains the most played song on the radio for
a second week.
Beyonce Topples JT
It’s
goodbye Justin as Beyonce moves into the penthouse for the
second time as a soloist and third in total.
My Love
slips to #3 as Irreplaceable gains four places to come out
on top.
While in Destiny’s Child, Ms Knowles hit top
with the Charlie’s Angels track Independent Woman (2000),
and earlier this year Check It Out topped the list.
Gwen’s Twin Spin
No Doubt lead singer Gwen Stefani
makes a twin start with her sophomore solo set The Sweet
Escape and lead single Wind It Up. Both are new entries on
their respective lists, at #20 and #2.
The new album
follows up the million-selling Love. Angel. Music. Baby. and
includes the Sound Of Music-sampling Lonely Goatherd
#2.
Gwen is yet to have a solo #1 here, though she did
top the ton with No Doubt’s Don’t Speak 10 years back in
1996.
There’s an eclectic cast of guests on the record
including Pharrell, Nellee Hooper, Depeche Mode’s Martin
Gore, Akon, Keane’s Tim Rice-Oxley and even Tony Kanal
from No Doubt.
The New Singles
#2 Gwen Sefani -
Wind It Up
See story above.
#17 The Game - Let’s
Ride
Let’s Ride sees The Game follow up the #25 It’s
Okay (One Blood) with the second single lifted off the
former #15 Doctor’s Advocate set.
#19 Zero T - Get ‘Em
Up
Gisborne-formed three years back, Zero T rack up their
second Top 40 hit as Get Em Up enters at #19. It’s lifted
from their forthcoming debut set Second To None and includes
their #15 Cruzin’ from earlier in the year.
#21
Chamillionaire - Grown & Sexy / Turn It Up
Second time
out, Chamillionaire opens at #21 with this double A-side
single, lifted from the #11 Sound Of Revenge. Cham’s
first hit Ridin’ included the NZ remix featuring Tyree and
peaked at #2. In fact, that hit set a Kiwi chart record for
the most weeks at #2 without ever hitting #1! It held on
for seven weeks in the runners-up spot.
#22 Che Fu - Spin
1 / Chains Reloaded
Another double A-side single and
it’s welcome back to Che Fu as Spin 1 / Chains Reloaded is
new at #22. Spin 1 is a collaboration with Wellingtonian
Aaradhna and is lifted from Che’s recent hits compile Hi
Score: The Best Of. Che has already been to #1 three times
in his career, including his hit Chains with DLT – a new
version of which backs Spin 1 and includes guest spots by
P-Money and Savage.
#38 Jay Z - Show Me What You
Got
Thirty-seven-year-old Brooklyn-native Shawn Carter
(aka Jay Z) enters the Singles Chart with Show Me What You
Got, the lead track from his latest album Kingdom Come, a
recent US #1.
#40 Annabel Fay - Lovin’ You
Baby
US-based Kiwi newcomer Annabel Fay (daughter of
merchant banker Michael Fay) lands a hit first time out as
Lovin’ You Baby makes it in at #40 on airplay alone. The
track is lifted from her debut album due to drop in
2007.
The New Albums
#1 Brooke Fraser -
Albertine
See story above.
#4 Eminem - Eminem Presents
The Re-Up
Marshall kind of retired and put together what
was supposed to be a mix-tape of young up and comers. But
here we have a sort of Eminem album featuring a cast of
many. It includes Mr Mathers’ hook-up with Akon Smack
That! (#14).
#13 12th Man - Boned!
Aussie comedian 12th
Man opens another innings with Boned!, straight in at #1
across the ditch and #13 here this week. Not music but
comedy, 12th Man first charted here 12 years back in March
1994 with Still The 12th Man. Boned! is his fifth New
Zealand chart appearance.
#20 Gwen Stefani - The Sweet
Escape
See story above.
#24 Il Divo - The Christmas
Collection
Last week Il Divo gained their third chart
album here, this week the classical boys gain their fourth
with the first festive-themed albums entry of 2006, the
aptly named The Christmas
Collection.
