Bruce Blair joins NZ Academy of Sport North

Highly experienced first-class cricket coach Bruce Blair has been appointed as the NZ Academy of Sport North (NZASN) Coach Advisor for the Waikato / BOP region.

For the last 5 years, Blair has been the Head Coach of the State Northern Knights.

He now joins NZASN’s Coach Support team who support and challenge high performance coaches working with elite athletes.

Blair has an impressive coaching record including coaching the State Northern Knights to two State Shield victories and travelling with the Black Caps as Assistant Coach to India.

He has often worked for NZ Cricket in an elite coach development role and has been active in developing coaches involved in the high performance programme at Northern Districts Cricket.

“Coaching has long been a passion for me and I am very excited about the opportunity to share knowledge and work alongside coaches in the Waikato / BOP region” said Blair.

Blair will also draw on his experience as an elite athlete in his new role. He was a NZ Representative (1982 – 86) and the 2nd highest run scorer in the history of Otago Cricket.

“It’s fantastic to secure the services of such a high profile coach such as Bruce. This is a huge opportunity for carded coaches in the Waikato/BOP region who have previously been serviced from Auckland; Bruce will be able to spend more time with them and give them far greater support than we have been able to provide in the past.” said NZASN Coach Support Manager and former National Badminton Coach Graeme Robson.

The NZASN Coach Support programme focuses on helping coaches with ‘how to coach’. High performance coaches typically have a lot of knowledge on ‘what’ to coach but have very little training in ‘how’ to coach.

Blair will join NZASN’s highly experienced coach support team led by Robson, including former NZ Gymnastics Coach Lyn Johnston and NZ Junior Softball Coach Lynda O’Cain.
