Public Broadcaster Releases Code of Practice

Public Broadcaster Releases Formal Code of Practice

Triangle Television has developed a comprehensive Code of Practice which it has adopted as a formal statement of intent for its stations in Auckland and Wellington.

Seen as an important step forward for the public broadcaster, the Code of Practice was released at the end of last week. The document incorporates issues such as appropriate language, journalistic balance, accuracy, decency, suitable content in children's programmes and news programmes, and outlines complaints procedures for viewers as required by various broadcasting authorities.

"The Code of Practice is seen as a 'living document' because we will, no doubt, amend and add to it over time to keep pace with the inevitable changes in the industry and our communities, and to ensure it continues to reflect what is suitable practice on New Zealand television," says Triangle Television's Chief Executive Officer, Jim Blackman.

"We have put a great deal of thought into developing this code, and have been very fortunate to have had the invaluable support of the Broadcasting Standards Authority."

Jim Blackman says the code is particularly important to minority-group programme providers for Triangle Television's Auckland and Wellington stations. "We're a public broadcast service that gives those groups a voice seldom heard on mainstream television, and we have a philosophy of not imposing editorial control on any programmes as long as they meet the criteria of the Broadcasting Standards Authority. The Code of Practice provides direction for those unfamiliar with New Zealand broadcasting standards, and will help them put their message across effectively."

Among the topics covered in the Code of Practice are Treaty of Waitangi issues, prejudice and discrimination, religion, violence and distressing content, sex and nudity, accuracy, impartiality and privacy. Sections are also included on community information, advertising and sponsorship, political broadcasts and election coverage.
