From E To A
Who would have thought that in this day
and age ABBA would topple Eminem to gain the biggest selling
album honours in the country?
They have and the Swedes
gain their fourth New Zealand Albums Chart-topper – their
first in 29 years – with the hits compile Number
Ones.
It’s their second hits collection to top the
survey here, the first being The Best Of ABBA in
1976.
Agnetha Faltskog, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson
and Anni-Frid ‘Frida’ Lyngstad haven’t recorded
together since the early ‘80s but that hasn’t stopped
them racking up two chart entries in the 21st Century
(2002’s #9 The Definitive Collection and now the #1 Number
Ones).
The new release is ABBA’s 16th chart album in
total.
Singles wise they’ve had a half dozen #1s
amongst their 23 local hits. The first was Waterloo (#3 in
1974), and the most recent a reissue of Dancing Queen (#14
in 1992.).

Akon Top
Akon’s collaboration with
Eminem jumps two spots this week to claim the top Singles
slot despite having previously peaked at #2, then dropped
out of the Top 10 before reversing its decline three weeks
ago.
Smack That becomes Akon’s third chart-topping
single, while Eminem racks up his fourth.
Originally from
Senegal and growing up in New Jersey, Alioune Thiam (aka
Akon) first charted here two years back in January 2005 with
the P-Money #23 collaboration Keep On Calling. Akon’s had
an even half dozen hits here, half of which have gone all
the way to #1. Last time out he teamed with Jamaican Beenie
Man for the #38 Girls.
Eminem has had 16 chart
appearances since his 1999 #4 debut My Name Is and four of
those, including Smack That, have topped the ton.
One
thing Mr Mathers is yet to achieve is a debut at #1. His
highest entry point to date has been #5, a feat he’s
repeated twice with My Name Is and When I’m Gone.
Akon
achieved the #1 debut out of the box with Savage on
Moonshine in April 2005.

Evermore Riding High In
Aussie
It’s a very good start to 2007 in Australia
for expat Fielding brothers Peter, John and Dann Hume who as
Evermore see their fourth Aussie hit single Light
Surrounding Me rebound to #3, its highest position in its
12th week on the ARIA Charts.
Their sophomore album Real
Life, from which the single is lifted, also moves back up to
#13 from #24 last week. The brothers’ chart career began
here with the 2003 #23 Oil & Water EP.
The New
Singles
#38 2Pac featuring TI and Ashanti - Pac’s
Life
Tupac Shakur was 25 when he died of gunshot wounds
11 years ago. This week the late rapper racks up his fourth
hit here in the 21st Century. This week’s only new entry
is a collaboration with TI and Ashanti, following on from
last year’s #3 collaboration Ghetto Gospel with Elton
John. 2Pac’s first hit was Dear Mama #4 in May 1995 and
had a five-week chart-topper, California Love, a year later
with Dr Dre.
