State house garden awards

Local winners announced in state house garden awards

The effort, imagination and care many Housing New Zealand tenants put into their gardens has been recognised with the announcement today of local Housing New Zealand Garden Awards winners.

Housing Minister Chris Carter announced the local winners today - see below for those results.

There were five categories, with local winners and ‘highly commended’ awards in each.

The list of these results, grouped under regions, and then by Housing New Zealand neighbourhood unit areas, is attached.

“It’s great to see so many tenants have entered their gardens with a number of outstanding examples showing just what can be achieved on a budget,” the Minister said.

“The Garden Awards aim to recognise the efforts of Housing New Zealand tenants who look after their gardens, and the quality of the entries shows that there are a lot of tenants who work really hard to keep their gardens looking great.

Housing New Zealand Acting Chief Executive Greg Orchard said the judges had a tough time choosing winners from the wide range of entries.

Judging at the local neighbourhood unit level took place before Christmas, with panels comprising Housing New Zealand Regional Managers, staff and in some cases local journalists with an interest in gardening.

The neighbourhood unit winners will be put forward to the national judging in Wellington on 19 January, with a panel that will include broadcaster and gardening enthusiast, Maggie Barry.

Judging – which was based on photographs – took into account effort and presentation.

The Awards received over 3000 entries –representing around four and a half percent of the state house portfolio.

A full list of local winners and ‘highly commended’ awards will be published in the Housing New Zealand tenant newsletter Close to Home in March 2007. This will also be available online at www.hnzc.co.nz
