Jazz Legend Nathan Haines Live At Zoomusic

New Zealand’s biggest selling jazz artist, Nathan Haines, will take to the stage at Auckland Zoo for Wild Bean Cafe ZooMusic on Sunday, 28 January (6pm – 9pm).

Nathan Haines will perform with his eight-piece All Star Band featuring vocalist Vanessa Freeman and keyboardist and producer Mike Patto, two widely acclaimed musicians from the United Kingdom. They will delight jazz lovers with material from Haines’ new album, along with songs from his hugely popular Squire for Hire record. Haines and band will be supported by the distinct sounds of dDub.

London-based Haines has earned a reputation as one of New Zealand’s foremost jazz musicians with his unique fusion of jazz and modern dance music. Classically trained, Haines studied jazz in New York before his return to Auckland where his residency at the club Cause Celebre became legendary. His Shift Left album (1994) was New Zealand’s highest selling jazz record until it was surpassed by Squire for Hire (2003), which remains in the number one position to date.

All concerts in the Wild Bean Cafe ZooMusic series (21 January to 24 February) also support a vital conservation project.Haines’ concert will help the 21st Century Tiger Kerinci Seblat Project in aid of Sumatran tigers. Haines says of this project: “The Sumatran tiger is definitely one of the worlds most endangered species, and with only 400 in the wild, it is imperative that they be saved. It is not too late. The 21st Century Tiger Project in Sumatra is helping to ensure another generation of people will be able to see these majestic creatures, and that their habitat is saved.”

It is predicted that if the current destruction of habitat and illegal poaching continues, this critically endangered animal will be extinct by 2020.

World Heritage Site Kerinci Seblat’s 14,000km² is one of the most important conservation areas in South-east Asia. Due to its large areas with natural prey and fewer predators, it holds the best hope for long-term tiger conservation. Its tiger protection and conservation units work to halt the poaching and trafficking of tigers, and work alongside villagers to prevent tiger-human conflict.

Supporting Nathan Haines is dDub - one of New Zealand’s best-loved live acts. The high-energy Auckland-based group draw their influences from rock, roots, reggae and dub, and the result is a unique sound guaranteed to capture your attention. dDub will entertain at the band rotunda from 6.15pm to 7.15pm before Haines performs with his eight-piece All Star Band from 7.45pm.
