Big Night Before Stars In Depth

Big Night Before Stars In Depth

That’s right, what are you doing on Thursday night? Auckland city is going to be absolutely heaving in anticipation of the biggest day of the year and tickets are selling fast to the official pre-party, the Big Night Before The Big Day Out.

The St James will be rocking to the rafters with the following Big Day Out artistes limbering up before the day:

THE VIOLENT FEMMES. Their website has a page of the best band stories on it from what they cheerfully refer to as “decades of disorganised music”. Like
When Nirvana opened for the Femmes in Australia singer Kurt Cobain refused to go onstage unless someone got him some drugs. Femmes tour manager Willie MacInnes gave him two Tylenol, but told Kurt they were powerful narcotics. A few minutes later Kurt hit the stage, saying,"I feel much better."

And Smiths singer Morrisey attended a Femmes show in London. Informed of his presence the Femmes came out for the encore and sang the Smiths song,"I would go out tonight, but I haven't got a stitch to wear"clad only in their underwear.

AndThe Femmes were playing at a rock festival with Lou Reed and Bonnie Raitt. Brian gave Lou a large cigar, and they were approached by Bonnie. Raitt asked, "Brian, do you have anything about that size i can put in my mouth?"

The Violent Femmes’ quirky Americana has lost none of its charm with age. The grandfathers of folk-punk, we love them still and can’t wait to see them.

Also on the bill at the Big Night Before The Big Day Out…

SCRIBE will debut his new live band and new material from his forthcoming album. Scribe’s band features an amazing line-up with regular DJ P Money being joined by Rio from Trinity Roots on bass, Godfrey de Grut from Che Fu’s Krates on keyboards, drummer Maka from Wai and Dubious Brother Tyna on the guitar along with Tyra from Open Souls and Ladi 6 on vocals.

PEACHES and HERMS make their NZ debut on Thursday too. Peaches has wowed the Auckland Big Day Out crowd before – notably dueting with an onscreen Iggy Pop. Herms bring a new dynamic to her crazy electro sound – this all-star indie line up features Samantha Maloney (who has played with Hole, Courtney Love, Motley Crue, and Eagles of Death Metal) on drums; Radio Sloan (Courtney Love, The Need) on guitar; and JD Samson from Le Tigre on keytar and sequencing. With this all-girl onslaught, the PEACHES live experience will be even more of a sheer rock ‘n’roll free for all – if that’s possible.

THE VEILS…“We must make things as terrifying and exciting as they can be” is the call to arms from Finn Andrews as he moves into a higher gear with his second Veils album, Nux Vomica and a thrilling new line-up that has come from Takapuna Grammar to London and back again. There is extreme anticipation in the air about seeing this band. We are not kidding. We never do.

The Big Day Out has sold out…so do the next best thing, and go to the official pre-party!
