MAORI TELEVISION HIGHLIGHTS

Week 6: Monday February 5 – Sunday February 11 2007

ASK YOUR AUNTIE – Monday to Friday at 3.00 PM from Monday February 5

Maori Television now starts broadcasting from 3.00 PM each weekday so it’s a chance to see repeats of the previous week’s pearls of wisdom from the Aunties. From romantic wrangles and family feuds to tricky tikanga issues and back-stabbing buddies, Auntie Ella and her team of tough-talking agony aunties have the no-nonsense answers to kick troubles into touch.

KORERO MAI – Monday to Friday at 3.30 PM from Monday February 5

The show that combines learning to speak reo Maori with a soap opera is back. An earlier start for Maori Television every weekday has made room for re-runs of the popular series, meaning fans can pick up from where it ended last year.

TANGAROA WITH PIO – Monday February 5 at 8.00 PM

Two wise kaumatua give Pio Terei a history lesson on the Far North before hooking him up with some of their whanau, who take the comedian out for an unforgettable fishing trip around the coast. This popular fishing show has all the reo Maori bits subtitled.

BACK HOME: ROOTS OF A NEW SOUTH AFRICA (MONDAY FEATURE) – Monday February 5 at 8.30 PM

Three ex-prisoners make an emotional return to Robben Island, the apartheid regime’s most brutal high-security prison, where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated. Living and working on the island as free men, they reflect in this documentary about the years spent fighting for survival and explain why they had to return.

WAITANGI 2007: KOTAHI TE RA – Tuesday February 6 from 12.00 PM to 7.30 PM

Get a big hit of national pride with a day-long live broadcast to commemorate the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. Views, news and interviews from Waitangi Day events at home and abroad, this ground-breaking special includes reports from Waitangi, and the creation of a giant silver fern sand sculpture on a Los Angeles beach.

Top off your Waitangi Day and get your groove on with coverage of Manukau’s 10th Waitangi Day multi-cultural family festival, including the funky sounds of the ever-popular Ardijah.

RUA TEKAU MA WARU (NZ DOCO) – Wednesday January 7 at 8.30 PM

When the 28th Maori Battalion held their national reunion last year, it was a chance for the last few veterans to reunite with the men they fought beside, and remember those who had died. This documentary tells their personal stories and captures the emotions of a very special event.

RAN – Thursday February 8 at 9.30 PM

The unveiling of a tombstone for a baby boy should mean an end to mourning but the financial debt of the event brings new heartache to the family. More drama from the Torres Strait in this acclaimed mini-series about an Australian nurse trying to make a new life on a tropical island.

THE DEEP – Friday February 9 at 8.30 PM

The ocean depths are up for commercial exploitation and new robots are being developed to speed up this modern-day gold rush, as revealed in this fascinating documentary on the world’s last unexplored wilderness.

NGA HAU E WHA POIHAKENA 2006 – Saturday February 10 at 6.00 PM

The on-field action from the Nga Hau e Wha Maori rugby league tournament in Sydney heats up when New Zealand’s own Te Arawa iwi team and the local Wests team face off for third place.

WISE GIRLS (SATURDAY FEATURE) – February 10 at 9.00 PM

Pop diva Mariah Carey proves she can act as well as sing in this fast-paced movie, also starring Mira Sorvino, about a waitress getting tangled up in the mob. The scene where they hide drugs in takeout boxes is a classic!

KIWI MAARA – Sunday February 11 at 5.30 PM

The only tri-lingual show in Aotearoa brings gardening tips, landscaping projects and traditional Maori medicinal herbs to the green-thumbed in reo Maori, English and sign language.

Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN (SUNDAY FEATURE) – Sunday February 11 at 9.00 PM

Abandoned by their girlfriends for the summer, teenagers Tenoch and Julio meet older woman Luisa at a wedding and tell her they’re off to a beautiful secret beach. She joins them for a dramatic, seduction-filled trip to the fictional destination in this acclaimed Mexican movie.
