Evermore’s Aussie Ascension
"It’s amazing to have such massive crowds at the Big Day Out singing Light Surrounding You along with us, and it's the #1 single in Australia,” says Evermore’s 19-year-old drummer Dann Hume as he and brothers, Peter and John, become just the ninth Kiwi act to top the list across the Tasman.
Light Surrounding You is the second single from their sophomore set Real Life and has been a slow burner, taking 14 weeks to reach the summit in Australia. The track is #25 here, having peaked at #12.
It was 1964 when the very first Kiwis flew over the ditch to occupy the penthouse as Ray Columbus & The Invaders did the business with She’s A Mod. OMC’s How Bizarre was the most recent New Zealand chart-topper across the Tasman, in 1996.
Evermore bookend this week’s Australian Top 40 with Running at #40, and they repeat the feat on the Aussie Digital list as well.

Kiwis who have had Australian #1 singles:
1964 - Ray Columbus & The Invaders - She’s A Mod (3 weeks at #1)
1975 - Bill & Boyd - Santa Never Made It Into Darwin (4 weeks)
1976 - Max Merritt & The Meteors - Slippin’ Away (2 weeks)
1979 - Mi-Sex - Computer Games (2 weeks)
1980 - Split Enz - I Got You (7 weeks)
1981 - The Swingers - Counting The Beat (4 weeks)
1987 - Dave Dobbyn & Herbs - Slice Of Heaven (5 weeks)
1996 - OMC - How Bizarre (2 weeks)
2007 - Evermore - Light Surrounding You (1 week so far)

The Big Day Out Effect
Some 44,000 punters and plenty of band publicity has seen a (predictable) sales spike for BDO acts, with six acts leading the pack in this week’s Albums Chart.
Mid-afternoon performers My Chemical Romance move their platinum former #1 The Black Parade back up to #3 as its lead single returns to the Top 10 at #10.
Las Vegas’s finest The Killers are right behind them, moving their sophomore platinum #1 Sam’s Town back up to #4 and landing their fifth hit single with Bones new at #24 on the Singles Chart.
The 8pm slot has helped Muse post the biggest gain of the week as Black Holes And Revelations rockets up 16 places to #12, the set having hit #8 when first issued back in July last year.
Leicester band Kasabian were one of the Big Day Out’s breakthrough bands, their sophomore set Empire becoming a new entry at #23 this week, first issued back in November last year.
Smiler Lily Allen’s Boiler Room appearance sees Alright Still return at #31, while Aussie #1 chart stars Evermore’s platinum-selling #2 Real Life re-enters at #37 to give the brothers their 27th week on the chart.

The New Singles
Akon and pal Eminem knock Nelly Furtado from the top after a solitary week to claim their third time on top with Smack That ahead of five new entries.

#2 Bow Wow featuring Chris Brown - Shortie Like Mine
Bow Wow turns 20 in March and had his first New Zealand hit five years back with the #17 Bow Wow (That’s My Name), known at that stage as ‘Lil Bow Wow’. Now he scores his biggest hit here to date as he hooks up with Chris Brown on the week’s highest new entry straight in at #2. It’s Bow’s (real name Shad Moss) fifth New Zealand hit and becomes collaborator Chris’s third.

#12 Ying Yang Twins featuring Wyclef Jean - Dangerous
Atlanta rap duo D’Angelo ‘D-Roc’ Holmes and Eric ‘Kaine’ Jackson gain their third and biggest New Zealand hit to date as they hook up with former Fugee Wyclef Jean on the #12 new entry Dangerous. All three of the duo’s hits are collaborations, the first being June 2004’s #28 Get Low with Lil Jon et al. Last time out was April last year when they teamed with Bubba Sparx on the #22 Ms New Booty. And it becomes Wyclef’s sixth solo hit, the total including Hips Don’t Lie with Shakira, one of two chart-toppers.

#19 Evanescence - Lithium
Fifth hit single time for Evanescence as the second track culled from their platinum #2 set The Open Door, enters at #19. Lithium follows the #3 Call Me When You’re Sober. The group’s previous hits have all gone Top 4, but they have yet to notch up a #1, the closest thus far being 2003’s #2 My Immortal.

#24 The Killers - Bones
See story above.

#28 OK Go - Here It Goes Again
This four-piece hail from Chicago, Illinois, and recorded their current album Oh No in Sweden. Damian Kulash, Tim Nordwind, Dan Kranopka and Andy Duncan gain their first New Zealand hit with Here It Goes Again new at #28 – helped along by their online video sensation featuring treadmills.

The New Album
#23 Kasabian - Empire
