Scouts launch new national programmes with a mudslide
1 February 2007
Scouting is marking the beginning of its centenary year with a National Mudslide Day and the unveiling of brand new national programmes for Keas, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers and Rovers.
“Scouting in New Zealand is currently going through the biggest change in its 100-year history,” says Chief Executive Geoff Knighton.
“A challenging and relevant new programme in 2007 will help young people learn important values, enhance their personal and leadership skills, and have a lot of fun at the same time!”
It begins with a series of mudslides organised by local Scout Groups throughout the country.
“Term One of the national programme is themed ‘Way 2 Go H2O’ and features activities such as ice sculpture and sponge relays for Keas, splash and dash for Cubs, water polo and aquatic tug ‘o’ war for Scouts, scuba diving and kayaking for Venturers, and beach parties, surfing and ‘adopt-a-beach’ clean-ups for Rovers,” says Mr Knighton.
“Term Two is themed ‘Our Place, Our Space’ and features activities centred around our environment, such as creating worm farms, playing nature noughts and crosses, conservation projects and park clean-ups, and wearable art.
“Throughout the year, there is also to be a series of national schools to introduce Scouts to canoeing, caving, mountain craft, photography, snow sports and aviation,” says Mr Knighton.
