Thistle
Hall Open Day - Saturday 24th Feb 2006
From 10am – 3pm
in the Thistle Hall Gallery at 293 Cuba Street
Thistle Hall is a vibrant community centre in the heart of New Zealand's cultural capital. We provide a community hall which is available for hire for regular groups and for weekend parties. We have a meeting room which is available for smaller community groups and as a neutral space for meetings and negotiations. We also run Wellington's only community gallery showcasing a range of artists and crafts people, from the established to the emerging.
Thistle Hall invites the public to check out some of the groups that use our hall on a regular basis. From 10am – 3pm in the Thistle Hall Gallery at 293 Cuba Street, you can watch or participate in any of the five groups (see below) being profiled at our open day. Then from 4pm join us for a pirate sound session thanks to Radio Active 89FM’s Jewel School and New Flava, with Japanese BBQ provided by Kazu Yakitori!

>11-12 Wellington Batucada
Wellington Batucada is a community based percussion group which brings the flamboyant world of samba from Brazil to Wellington. Batucada is a Brazilian word used to describe the syncopated, African-influenced samba music played by a large percussion group (bateria) as part of a street parade or carnival. We are an all inclusive group - anyone can join regardless of experience or ability. We will even provide community owned authentic Brazilian instruments for those who do not have their own. Currently we have 40-45 members regularly coming to our weekly practices. We are in demand to play at many parades, festivals and events. Often we perform with our affiliated Brazilian influenced groups Capoeira Pasifika, Dance Brasil, and The Sambalicious Dancers.
>12-1 Capoiera Pasifika
Capoeira is an
Afro-Brazilian art form born out of resistance against
slavery and the oppression of Africans and their descendents
enslaved on the vast coffee and sugar plantations in Brazil.
It encompasses percussion, song and a distinctive form of
interactive dance-like gymnastic combative movement
involving theatrics and a playful spirit. Our group
(Capoeira Pasifika Mandinga Aotearoa) was established in
1992 in Auckland by a New Zealander who learned Capoeira
from a Brazilian master in the USA. The group has grown
throughout the country and several branches now exist in
various centres around New Zealand. The Wellington branch
has been active since 2000 and classes for beginners are
offered every week at Thistle hall.
