The 2006 Cheap as Chips

Sunday 4 March 2007

University of Canterbury Athletic Oval, Christchurch

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The 2006 Cheap as Chips event went down in history as Christchurch’s biggest modern music event in over a decade. This year the highly anticipated event is set to be another fantastic combination of great music, good people and outdoor fun. Best of all, it is STILL Cheap as Chips…

Cheap as Chips 2007 sees Fat Freddy’s Drop, Shapeshifter and Kora, joined by a selection of RDU’s finest, take to the stage on Sunday 4 March at the University of Canterbury Athletic Oval.

The Fat Freddy’s Drop appearance at Cheap as Chips 2007 follows resounding success of last year’s show when the band enjoyed playing in the late afternoon rays. This year’s show is the first time the band have played in Christchurch since their last appearance at Cheap as Chips.

DJ Fitchie (aka Mu) says, “ Freddy’s are excited to play again at Cheap as Chips. We’re locked down in the studio recording our second album so we haven’t played live much this summer, just picking a few good gigs like Cheap as Chips so we’re looking forward to hitting the stage.”

Also taking the stage are Christchurch’s hottest export, Shapeshifter. Our own live electronic maestros are currently enjoying a summer of blistering success – they won Best Live Act, Best Song and Best Album at the bNet National Music Awards 2006. They’ll be dropping in to Christchurch after a phenomenal Australian tour where they’ve been busy taking their live blend of Jazz, Latin, Reggae, Hip Hop, Rock and Electronica onto the world stage. Their last show in Christchurch with the Christchurch Symphony sold out weeks in advance. Cheap as Chips will be the band’s only Christchurch show this summer.

Also performing at this year’s event are Kora. The Kiwi roots-reggae-rock group are poised to be another huge success with the release of their first album later this year. This is the first show from Kora in Christchurch for some time and gives the audience a chance to see why Kora already have a huge fan base. Their live show is electric and a must see for any Rock or Roots fan.

The main acts will be supported by a collection of RDU’s fantastic show hosts to complete the day’s entertainment. They are: Departure Lounge, a 12 piece band, headed by Oakley Grenell, serving up soulful grooves and vibrant instrumentation to ease you into the day. DJ Partido, from Supafly on RDU98.5FM (Sundays 7-9pm) putting the funk back into your fuel tank, DJ Messanjah, of the Dubwise show, an exponent of roots, reggae and dancehall culture (Sundays 5-7pm), Urban Notion playing the smoothest of drum’n’bass on RDU98.5FM (Fridays 9-11pm) and Dr Hitchcock from RDU’s Mixtape Sessions (Thursdays 7-9pm) - electro, bootlegs, remixes, rock, pop and quirky stuff dubbed with eclectic, semi-sonic explosions.

Cheap as Chips organiser and Fabel Music Co-Director Karyn South says she is delighted to be putting on this huge event inChristchurch.

“We’re really looking forward to another excellent day out at the University Oval. We have the best line-up imaginable for $25, and the perfect venue. It is a fully grassed amphtheatre with a large shaded embankment encircling the stage. Last year people had a great day out and we know the demand for tickets to this year’s event is going to be even bigger. This concert is the only Christchurch concert any of these bands are playing this summer and the price of the ticket means that anyone can come”.

A huge selection of food stalls with an array of items will feature at this years Cheap as Chips event. Everything from coffee and croissants, to souvlakis and spirulina will be on offer so no one goes hungry.

Tickets for the event are on sale now and of course they’re still peanuts for acts of this calibre. Ticket prices are a minimal - $25 (+b.f) for adults, tickets for kids under 12 are just $10 and kids under 5 are admitted free. People are advised to get their tickets early as capacity is limited and the line-up is unmissable.

Gates open and the first support bands go on stage at 12 noon on Sunday 4 March 2007.

The University Athletic Green is serviced by Red Bus routes, the Orbiter and the MetroStar. Plenty of parking will also be available on the University site.

Tickets to the event on sale now:
