Capital E National Arts Festival
International Performing Arts Conference coincides with Capital E National Arts Festival
Capital E, Wellington’s centre for children’s performing arts and creative technologies, will host the eighth annual Asian Pacific Producers, Presenters and Promoters Network (APPN) Symposium, 18-20 March. APPN is a network of arts professionals who aim to further the development of performing arts for young audiences in the Asian Pacific region. The timing of its 2007 conference is to coincide with the award-winning Capital E National Arts Festival, New Zealand’s largest arts festival for children and their families, in town 12-24 March.
Capital E National Theatre for Children Artistic Director, Peter Wilson is the New Zealand representative to the APPN. “This is a great opportunity for the delegates to see first hand the vibrant and innovative work being created for young audiences in this part of the world.”
APPN members work to increase the recognition of high quality, professional works in the region. The network’s objectives include: to share information and services; to provide opportunities for members to experience and learn from performances in the region; to reduce barriers that inhibit international touring; to encourage the highest artistic and production standards and to collaborate on joint international projects.
Capital E National Theatre for Children shares the same aims and objectives, and no better is this demonstrated than in their production of Spinning Mountain, with its world premiere taking place during the Capital E National Arts Festival. Artists from New Zealand, Bali and Australia have combined their talents to create this beautiful and innovative new work. The musical score, composed by award winning Gareth Farr and New Zealand based Indonesian composer I Wayan Gde Yudane, will premiere as part of the upcoming Womad Festival in New Plymouth. Spinning Mountain features puppetry designed and performed by acclaimed Balinese artist, I Kadek Budi Setiawan, who hails from one of Bali’s most renowned family of puppeteers.
Capital E is managed by the Wellington Museums Trust with major funding from the Wellington City Council. It incorporates the OnTV Studio, Soundhouse New Zealand, a year round events calendar and the Capital E National Theatre for Children, which receives major funding support from Creative New Zealand.
